Giro Prolight Techlace Cycling Shoes Info
When re-thinking their top of the line shoe, Giro designers decided to pull out all the stops, shave every gram, while still keeping the shoe as stiff as can be. The result is the 150g per shoe Prolight Techlace cycling shoes.
150g per shoe. Size 42.5. That means a pair of these weigh less than a single shoe from some manufacturers. Less rotating weight means greater efficiency, and as your feet are moving around 90 times a minute for every minute of a ride. The weight savings adds up to extra speed.
Let’s start with the sole. They started with their basic sole shape, and built it out of Textreme carbon fiber. This means you get a 15g weight drop with no sacrifice in stiffness. The only sacrifice was that the heel pads are not replaceable. The hardware to do that added grams they felt were unnecessary. The cleat hardware is titanium, also to minimize weight. The lasting board, which is what is what you see when you look under the insole, has been perforated to minimize weight as well.
The insole is also a place to save weight. Included with the shoe are both an thin, ultralight insole and Giro’s SuperNatural footbeds. The former is wafer thin, has no arch support, but are incredibly light. The latter are are thin, compressible foam beds, lighter than the standard version that come with three different Velcro-backed arches. Find the one that fits your foot best or go without. You can stow it all inside the included travel bag.
The upper is made of two parts bonded together. They start with a foundation of monofilament mesh. It’s light, it’s airy, it doesn’t stretch. Then for added stiffness and durability, they bonded a thin TPU film. And because they know that the toe and heel cup come in for lots of abuse, there’s strategic reinforcement around these parts. Because heel support is non negotiable, the support here is the same as you’ll find in other Giro shoes. Because a padded tongue is essential for long-term riding comfort, it is still present, still dense, and still super comfortable.
As you can see this has a full Techlace securing system. Three Velcro straps. The two work in concert. The laces are threaded through the upper, and then join at the strap. You pull the strap and the laces tighten. You put the strap down on its mate, and they’re secured. The strap part has a hidden coupler. The lace aglets (aka ends) snap into the coupler and stay put. With this system, you can replace the laces if they break, or if they’re too long or if they get dirty.
The Giro Prolight Techlace Cycling Shoes boost your cycling performance by sculpting away all the non-essential elements and adding the precisely adjustable comfort of laces. It also comes with a travel bag.
