Zipp 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc Front Wheel Info
The Zipp 404 Firecrest Tubeless Disc Front Wheel carries a name that's been synonymous with aero road speed for decades, and this latest version updates that heritage with a hookless rim, a reworked hub, and a price point below Zipp's flagship NSW line. At 58mm deep, it sits in the sweet spot between a shallow climbing wheel and a full-depth time trial disc, making it equally at home in a road race, a triathlon, or a long gran fondo over mixed terrain. This is the wheel Zipp points to when a rider wants one aero front wheel that doesn't force a tradeoff between racing speed and all-day comfort.
The rim itself is full carbon and hookless, meaning the sidewall transitions straight into the tire bead rather than curling over it. Zipp uses this construction because it allows for more efficient resin distribution during layup, producing a rim that's lighter and stronger while creating a more seamless, aerodynamic junction between tire and rim. The 23mm internal width is built around wider tubeless tires run at lower pressure, specifically 28-35c tubeless tires compatible with tube or sealant setups, with a maximum outside width of 28mm and a max tire pressure of 73psi. Running wider tires at reduced pressure is central to how Zipp approaches speed on real roads, not just in a wind tunnel.
That approach has a name: Zipp calls it Total System Efficiency, or TSE, developed by engineers at the brand's Nest Advanced Development Lab in Indianapolis. Instead of chasing aero numbers alone, TSE treats wind resistance, rolling resistance, gravity, and vibration loss as one connected system, and the 404 Firecrest reflects that thinking throughout. The rim surface uses Zipp's ABLC Sawtooth Technology, a dimpled pattern that manages airflow across the rim's surface to hold stability in crosswinds without adding drag. It's a wheel built to stay composed at speed on the kind of variable, gusty roads riders actually train and race on, not just in ideal conditions.
At the center of the wheel is Zipp's new ZR1 DB hub, engineered in Germany with an improved seal design aimed at both durability and quicker engagement, delivering 66 points of engagement so power gets to the road faster when you put in an effort. The hub uses steel cartridge bearings and a Center Lock disc brake mount, and is built to handle a max recommended system weight of 253 pounds. As a full wheelset, Zipp lists this build at 1,559 grams in its lightest configuration, a meaningful drop from earlier generations of the 404 without sacrificing the stiffness or stability that made the line a staple in the first place. For riders who want a versatile aero front wheel that performs on race day and holds up through a full season of training, the 404 Firecrest remains one of the more proven choices in Zipp's lineup.
