Zipp History

Zipp Wheels began in 1988 with an innovative spirit and a background in Indy car aerodynamics, pioneered by motorsports engineer Leigh Sargent. Driven by the vision to create “Speed Weaponry” for cyclists, Zipp’s first carbon disc wheels quickly gained popularity for their unmatched aerodynamics and performance. These early models set the foundation for Zipp’s ethos: to make the fastest wheels possible. By 1990, Zipp’s designs were already seen on podiums, thanks to triathlon champion Mark Allen and the Zipp 440 wheel, which became a favored choice in both triathlon and road racing.

As Zipp evolved through the 1990s, the brand introduced iconic products such as the Zipp 2001 frame and Zipp 400 wheelset, which cemented Zipp’s reputation as a leader in wheel innovation. Collaborations with pro teams and strategic use of wind tunnel testing made Zipp a forerunner in cycling aerodynamics. By 2003, Zipp’s engineering breakthroughs led to the release of their signature dimpled disc wheels, enhancing stability and speed across various racing conditions, including cobbled classics like the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

In 2007, Zipp joined forces with SRAM, providing additional resources to expand its technology and reach. This partnership paved the way for the development of the Firecrest technology in 2010, a pioneering wide-rim design that boosted aerodynamics and handling, especially in crosswinds. This technology transformed wheels like the 303 and became the standard for Zipp’s high-performance lineup, gaining accolades in both the pro racing circuit and recreational markets.

Today, Zipp’s innovations continue with models like the 3ZERO MOTO for mountain biking and the 101 XPLR for gravel, expanding its offerings while maintaining a singular goal: making every rider faster. With Total System Efficiency (TSE) at the core of its design approach, Zipp addresses speed holistically by reducing resistance from multiple sources, pushing the boundaries of wheel performance for all terrains. Through decades of dedication to speed, Zipp remains a brand that cyclists trust for the ultimate competitive edge.
