Zipp 1ZERO HITOP SW Disc Brake Centerlock 29" Wheel - Front Info

The Zipp 1ZERO HITOP SW Disc Brake Centerlock 29" Wheel - Front is built for the version of cross country racing that exists now, not the smooth, groomed courses XC wheels were originally designed around. Modern XC tracks throw roots, rock gardens, and rutted turns at riders, and Zipp built the 1ZERO HITOP SW to handle that terrain on a hardtail or a short-travel trail bike, rated for forks with up to 130mm of travel.

The rim is carbon and hookless, using Zipp's proprietary HITOP carbon layup, which is engineered to flex slightly under impact rather than transmitting every hit straight into the rider's hands. That compliance is the point — a wheel that's only stiff can feel harsh and skittish over broken ground, while a wheel with some give tracks the terrain instead of bouncing off it. At a 21.2mm rim depth and 30mm internal width, the profile stays shallow and wide, which suits XC's low-speed, technical demands better than a deeper aero rim would. The rim carries an asymmetrical, winged profile that gives the tire a smoother resting surface at the bead, which cuts down on pinch flats when you clip a rock at speed.

Built into the wheel is Zipp's TyreWiz tire-pressure monitoring system, which tracks pressure in real time so you're not guessing whether a wheel has bled air over the course of a rocky descent — useful on a wheel like this, where tire pressure has a direct effect on how well that HITOP compliance actually works. The front hub uses Zipp's ZM2 SL hubset, rated at 66 points of engagement, and is available with standard or Torque Cap axle configurations depending on your fork's spec. This wheel is built for CenterLock disc brakes.

Tire compatibility runs 47-71c on tubeless or tubed setups, with a maximum tire pressure of 50 psi. Zipp rates the complete 1ZERO HITOP SW wheelset — front and rear together — at a maximum recommended system weight of 286 lbs (130kg), and lists the lightest full wheelset configuration at roughly 1,375 grams.

This front wheel makes the most sense paired with a matching 1ZERO HITOP SW rear wheel, built out as a full set for a cross country racer or trail rider who wants a lightweight, compliant setup that can handle a technical course without beating up the rider in the process. It's a wheel for someone racing or riding hard enough that both weight and trail feel matter equally.

The RA Perspective

We'd recommend this wheel to a cross country racer who's tired of getting bounced around on rough courses by a wheel that's stiff for the sake of being stiff. The HITOP carbon layup gives it noticeably more give than a typical XC rim, and that compliance is what lets you carry speed through a rock garden instead of skipping over the top of it.

The TyreWiz system is a nice inclusion rather than an aftermarket add-on, and it matters more here than on a road wheel — tire pressure has a real effect on how well this rim's compliance actually works, so having a constant readout instead of guessing is genuinely useful mid-race.

The tradeoff worth knowing: this is a front wheel only, so you're either building a full set with a matching rear or already running one. At a 21.2mm rim depth, it's also not going to feel like a deep, punchy wheel on flat sections — the shallow profile and wide 30mm internal width are tuned specifically for technical terrain, not straight-line speed.

We'd point this at a serious XC racer or a trail rider on a short-travel hardtail who's running a demanding course regularly enough that the compliance and pressure monitoring pay for themselves. If you're mostly riding smooth singletrack or gravel, a simpler, cheaper wheel would do the job just as well.
