Shimano Dura-Ace ST-R9120 Shifter Lever Info
Shimano has been working hard on refinements to their lever bodies. As a result their Dura-Ace ST-9120 Dual-Control Mechanical Shifter/Hydraulic Brake Lever body is almost imperceptibly larger than the 9100 mechanical/mechanical lever body. The levers are sold individually, one for the right, one for the left. The shift blades are identical while the hydraulic body is slightly larger. This is a plus for both comfort and aesthetics, and the improvements to the lever action are significant.
You have the same comfy, carbon ergonomic lever blade as on the 9100, which is easy to wrap a finger around whether on the hoods or the drops. The lever body has gotten a bit smaller than it’s mechanical/hydraulic predecessor. The rubber hood itself is textured for easier grip. What you can’t see, and is most welcome, is there is 14mm of reach adjust built into the lever. When you pull the levers out of the box, they’re set at the 10mm point, meaning you can move the blade out up to 4mm or in up to 10mm, so the blade can be in the perfect spot for your fingers.
The shift action on the levers has been much improved. The distance needed to shift “up” with the brake lever is 24% shorter, and the distance needed to shift “down” with the interior release lever is 14% shorter. It’s so fast, Shimano calls the “down” shifts “instant release.
The brake action has been improved as well. The lever engages faster for a shorter strike
The lever set weighs in at 505g, making each lever 252.5g. It comes with Shimano’s OT-SP41 cable housing and polymer cables for the shifters. And Shimano hoses and hydraulic fluid for the brakes.
When combined with 9100 derailleurs and included cables, the effort needed to actuate a shift is lower than ever. Gloved hands, tired hands, small hands, all three: the shifts are easy and fast. Because the shifting geometry hasn’t changed from the 9000 series, these should be able to work with Dura-Ace 9000 derailleurs.
