Lightweight Gipfelsturm Tubular Rear Wheel Info

1025g for a complete set of wheels. Some rear wheels weigh more than this. A set of filled water bottles weighs more. And these are stiff and durable to boot. Lightweight's Gipfelsturm Tubular Wheelset is lighter than you thought wheels could be.

Freakishly light yet reassuringly solid and rather aero. Lightweight can manage to create all things in the Gipfelsturm because of their knowledge of materials and the way they build wheels. The wheel once called the Ventoux is built the way all Lightweights are—with carbon-fiber spokes running from the rim to wrapping around the hub and running back to the rim, then tensioned and epoxied into place. The spokes are evenly and highly tensioned, which ensures that the wheel will be laterally stiff and round and true—and will stay this way no matter what. They use 20 spokes in front and 24 in the rear, a concession to the ultra-light, 27mm deep tubular rim being used.

But there are no concessions to the competition. The wheel won't flex when you're out of the saddle in your granny gear. It won't flex when you're taking a switchback at the edge of control. This will get you up the mountain faster and down safer and more easily. And for those who want light wheels and are concerned about crosswinds, the Gipfelsturm is a great pick as the shallower depth is less visible gusty winds.

As with all Lightweights, the hubs are made in house, with a carbon-fiber shell and pressed-in bearings. The rear hub utilizes a DT Swiss cassette body. You choose between Campagnolo and Shimano/SRAM splines; both are for 9/10/11-speed cassettes.

The wheels come with a set of Lightweight brake pads produced by SwissStop. They also come with Lightweight steel quick release skewers (only 45g for the set), and a double-wheel bag. Wheel magnets are embedded in both the front and rear rim, so you won't need to mount your own and the aero profile isn't disturbed.

Lightweight strongly urges buyers to register their wheels on the Lightweight website within five days of receiving wheels. Each wheel has a unique ten-digit number that is encoded on a microchip embedded in each wheel. This helps you with both their crash replacement program and Wheelprotection program-and can come in handy if your wheels are lost or stolen. The first applies to all wheels and entitles you to 30% off a replacement wheel if you destroy one in a crash. The second is their insurance program, which means that by paying up front, your Lightweight wheels are protected for three years from any damage that might occur. Go here (http://lightweight.info/gb/en/service/registration) to read up and register.

Lightweight offers the Gipfelsturm in their Weiss Edition variant. The spokes and hub are coated with white Durflon polymer for a glossy custom look. The coating adds about 20g per wheel, which still makes this a sub-1000g wheelset, and it's got more bling.

The Lightweight Gipfelsturm Tubular Wheel is shallow and super light, great for crosswinds, punchy riding, and steep climbing.
