Lightweight was founded in 1994 by Heinz Obermayer and Rudolf Dierl in Friedrichshafen, Germany. The first prototype was built from scrap materials and cured in a Leberkäse oven — an unconventional beginning that led directly to one of the most technically rigorous wheel brands in the sport. Every Lightweight wheel is handmade in Friedrichshafen using full carbon monocoque construction with no hybrid materials. The brand draws on aerospace and medical engineering expertise, and its racing record reflects the engineering: Jan Ullrich’s 1997 Tour de France, victories at the 1995 and 1996 Olympics, and Richard Carapaz’s gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games. RA Cycles carries the full Lightweight road and gravel wheel lineup. The Fernweg 63 and 85 EVO Pro Disc wheelsets sit at the top at $10,895 — deep-section aero wheels for road racing. The Meilenstein EVO and Obermayer EVO cover all-around and climbing categories, and the Pfadfinder EVO is Lightweight’s gravel-specific platform ($5,000–$5,650). Individual front and rear wheels are available across most models for custom pairings. The collection also includes handlebars, stems, seatposts, bottle cages, and accessories.
The Lightweight wheels collection has its own dedicated page — browse Lightweight wheels directly, or explore the full wheel selection at RA Cycles across road and gravel.
