HED Emporia GC3 Pro Disc Brake Wheelset Info

The HED Emporia GC3 Pro Disc Brake Wheelset is HED's carbon gravel wheelset built for riders who want road-bike aero thinking applied to gravel terrain. HED developed the rim shape by drawing on the narrow-profile aerodynamics of its Vanquish road wheels and pairing that with a wide gravel-specific rim, aiming for a wheel that holds speed on gravel rather than just surviving it. At $1,299.99 against a $1,950 regular price, it's a way into HED's higher-end carbon gravel platform, built at the company's Minnesota factory where HED has raced and built gravel wheels since 2008.

The rim is carbon and hookless, with a 26mm internal width and 31mm external width — wide enough to properly support the higher-volume tires gravel racing and adventure riding demand. HED built the GC3 Pro around a minimum tire size of 32mm, with RA Cycles listing compatibility up to 55mm, covering everything from fast gravel race tires to loaded bikepacking rubber on the same rim. That width is paired with a lower rim profile than a road aero wheel, which adds vertical compliance to help absorb vibration from washboard and chunky gravel rather than transmitting it straight through the frame.

Spokes are Sapim Laser, J-bend, laced 2-cross front and rear, running into a HED hub with a 5-pawl freehub body and 6902 stainless bearings on a Centerlock disc mount. The front wheel weighs 655 grams and the rear 770 grams, for a 1,425 gram pair — light for a wheel built to handle sustained gravel abuse rather than optimized purely for weight. Front axle options include both 12x100mm and 15x100mm thru-axle standards, with a 12x142mm rear, and freehub bodies are available for Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo Ekar, and Microspline drivetrains, covering nearly every gravel drivetrain on the market.

HED hand-builds these wheels in Minnesota from raw carbon sheets rather than outsourcing rim production, a detail that matters to riders who care where and how their wheels are actually made. This is a wheelset for gravel racers and long-distance adventure riders who want a lightweight, wide, tubeless-ready carbon wheel that can take a real beating over hundreds of miles of mixed terrain, rather than a wheel built only for smooth gravel roads.

The RA Perspective

The GC3 Pro is one of the wider gravel wheels we carry, and that 26mm internal width makes a real difference in how a tire sits and performs — tires measure closer to their stated width and hold their shape better under hard cornering on loose surfaces than they do on a narrower rim.

The weight numbers are honest rather than flattering. At 1,425 grams for the pair, this isn't the lightest carbon gravel wheel on the market, but that weight buys real durability for riders putting in long, rough miles rather than a wheel optimized purely for a scale.

The freehub compatibility is a genuine strength here — Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo Ekar, and Microspline options mean this wheel isn't locked to one drivetrain, which matters if you're building a gravel bike from parts you already own or expect to change groupsets down the road.

We'd recommend the GC3 Pro to gravel racers and bikepackers who ride enough rough terrain that wheel durability matters as much as weight, and who want a wide, tubeless-ready platform that can run everything from fast gravel tires to loaded touring rubber.
