Shimano CN-HG901 11s Chain Info
With the move to 11-speed for 2015, the Shimano CN-HG900 Chain gets a minor re-design from the Dura-Ace 9000 chain to optimize it for the greater number of cogs. As all know, saving every gram is paramount for the any groupset as it is designed for top-level competition. This is why it relies on hollow pivot pins. This feature will save you 15 grams over the CN-HG700 chain.
Like its predecessor, CN-9000, the CN-HG900 Chain bears the asymmetrical HG-X design. Each of the four plates, inner and outer, are shaped differently to act in a certain way relative to their position with the front chain rings or rear cogs as you shift up or down through the gear range.
This means that the HG-X chain is directional. It must be installed in a specific manner -- the Shimano logo should be right-side up on the section of chain between the top of the cassette and the top of the chain ring. When installed correctly, the side-specific beveling on the outside plates optimizes the movement of the chain as it tries to climb to the left onto larger cogs or to the right onto larger chain rings. The inside plates have asymmetrical beveling as well. This helps the chain drop down from larger cogs or chain rings to smaller with greater speed and consistency.
The Shimano CN-HG900 Chain is directional and 11-speed specific. It uses Shimano's new Sil-Tec Flourine coating on all links and pivot parts to repel corrosive elements, run smoother, and improve durability in all conditions. What's better than the best shifting performance ever? It's that it is also lighter than ever at 246.5 grams.
