Scott Speedster Gravel 40 Bike Info
The Scott Speedster Gravel 40 Bike is built for riders who want a capable gravel bike without paying carbon-frame prices. At $1,499.99, it's an accessible entry into Scott's gravel lineup, built around a durable alloy frame and a component spec that prioritizes reliability and all-day comfort over race-day weight savings. Scott has been building bikes since the early 1990s, when the brand shifted from its original ski pole business into cycling — its aerodynamic handlebar helped carry Greg LeMond to his 1989 Tour de France win, and Scott shipped its first full-suspension mountain bikes a few years later. The Speedster Gravel 40 carries that cycling history into a straightforward, dependable gravel platform.
The frame is double-butted 6061 alloy, built around what Scott calls its Gravel geometry — a more upright, stable riding position suited to long days on mixed surfaces rather than an aggressive, race-oriented fit. It pairs with a matching alloy fork with a tapered steerer tube, and the frame routes cables internally for a cleaner look and fewer places for dirt and water to collect. A replaceable derailleur hanger protects the frame from damage in a crash or a bent-hanger shift issue, and fender mounts mean the Speedster Gravel 40 can convert to a wet-weather commuter or four-season bike as easily as it handles a weekend gravel ride.
Shimano's Tiagra groupset handles shifting, running a 2x10 setup with 50/34 chainrings and an 11-34 cassette — a wide enough range to climb loaded gravel or grind through sand and loose surfaces without running out of low gears. Braking comes from Shimano's BR-RS305 mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors front and rear, a mechanical rather than hydraulic setup that trades a bit of lever feel for simpler home maintenance and easier long-term serviceability, particularly useful for a bike that's likely to see rough conditions and less frequent shop visits.
Syncros, Scott's in-house component brand, supplies the wheels and cockpit. The Syncros Race X25 Disc wheelset is built with a 28-spoke count for durability, wrapped in Schwalbe G-One Bite Performance tires at a 700x45c width — wide enough to smooth out chatter on gravel and loose surfaces while still rolling efficiently on pavement between dirt sections. The Syncros Creston 2.0 X alloy handlebar, RR2.5 stem, and matching RR2.5 seatpost round out a cockpit designed for stability over long rides, with a Syncros Tofino saddle to match.
At roughly 25 pounds and available across seven sizes from XXS to XXL, the Speedster Gravel 40 is built to fit a wide range of riders rather than a narrow, race-focused range. It's a bike for someone getting into gravel riding for the first time, commuting on a mix of pavement and unpaved paths, or wanting a dependable second bike that can run fenders through the winter. The component choices — mechanical disc brakes, alloy construction, a wide-range Tiagra drivetrain — all point toward the same goal: a gravel bike that's easy to live with and inexpensive to maintain, without asking a new rider to learn hydraulic bleeding or carbon frame care on day one.
