Rotor 4224 BB30 Road to 24mm Ceramic Bottom Bracket Info
Just because you want to fit conventional thru-axle road cranks into a BB30 standard bottom bracket doesn’t mean you want to skimp on performance. The Rotor 4224 bottom bracket with Ceramic Bearings offers a performance edge that would be hard to get otherwise. This allows you to fit an external bottom bracket on your BB30 frame so installation of 24mm diameter thru-axle cranks is a cinch and nearly friction free.
The BB30 standard was a boon to frame builders, but it added confusion and trouble for people who either already owned, or simply preferred cranks like the Rotor 3D24-cranks with 24mm diameter thru-axles. The 3D24 is not the only 24mm thru-axle crank: Shimano’s are that diameter, as well as FSA’s MegaExo line. BB30 refers to the thru-axle spindle diameter Cannondale pioneered, but the measurement that matters here is 42mm. That refers to the inner diameter of the BB30 bottom bracket shell.
At one time, the only way to install 24mm thru-axle cranks on a BB30 frame was to press in adapters. Adapters that often creaked and caused other problems. Now those problems are gone.
Rotor makes this bottom bracket out of 7075-T6 aluminum. There are two external cups, which thread into each other inside the BB shell. Inside the cups sit hybrid bearings: steel races and ceramic balls. Ceramic balls are rounder, roll smoother, and need less attention than steel. The cups themselves are splined to work with conventional bottom bracket cup tools.
The Rotor 4224 Road Ceramic Bottom Bracket adds versatility, reduced friction, and increased life to your BB30 mountain bike.
