Mavic IO Track Tubular Front Wheel Info
The Mavic IO Track Tubular Front Wheel has long been a favorite among track racers. It got an upgrade right before the Rio Olympics, a benefit everyone can enjoy.
The IO design, five directional carbon-fiber spokes (there’s a marking on the hub telling you which way), is stiff both laterally and vertically. While this can be a drawback on the road, it’s a benefit on the track, where the surface is super-smooth, and any lateral deflection can post a problem. You want the wheel to track exactly where you point it, with no flex or lag. That remains, but the spokes have been thinned, starting at 50mm deep at the rim and growing to 60mm at the hub. The rim itself has a new flattened NACA profile, which improves aerodynamics and crosswind stability. They claim the wheel will save around 25 watts when racing, when compared to the previous IO.
A result of the new, wider design, a small, but important 1mm wider, they recommend a new tire width. 23mm should give you the most aero benefit. The wheel weighs 750g
