The upper is where the MX242 earns its reputation. Lake constructs it from a combination of Helcor abrasion-resistant leather, Ecco full-grain leather, and Nufoam lining — with carbon fiber support panels woven in to maintain structure and foot stability without adding unnecessary weight. The upper is divided into six independent zones, each adjustable on its own, so you can relieve pressure from a specific spot on one foot without tightening the rest of the shoe. The heat-moldable heel counter goes further, allowing the heel cup to be custom-shaped to your foot for a hold that stays locked in through technical descents and sustained climbing efforts. Two BOA® Li2 dials handle closure — the Li2 is the most advanced dial platform in cycling, offering micro-adjustment in both directions and built to resist the abrasion that comes with trail riding.

Underfoot, Lake uses their Competition carbon fiber sole paired with a Mountain Competition rubber outsole. The full carbon construction ensures stiff, efficient power transfer to the pedal, while the rubber extends across the sole for ground stability and protection during hike-a-bike sections. The MX Competition Last gives the MX242 a larger toe box than Lake's Sport last — enough room to prevent binding on steep climbs or technical terrain — with a tighter heel for a secure, race-ready feel.
