Lake CX400 Shoes - Wide Info
For cyclists with wide feet, Lake has no real competition at this level. The brand has been building anatomically precise cycling shoes since 1981, and no other manufacturer matches their range of width options at genuine performance tiers. The Lake CX400 Shoes — Wide are built on Lake's Race Last — a performance-oriented fit designed for high-cadence riding, with a slightly narrower toe box and tighter heel than Lake's Competition Last — cut to their Wide specification. Riders who have always had to compromise on fit get a shoe that actually fits, without sacrificing stiffness, construction quality, or the refined aesthetic of a proper race shoe.
The outsole is the standout technical feature. Lake used 3k twill weave carbon fiber — their highest-grade carbon — for a sole that forms into a complex shape while retaining exceptional stiffness and a low weight. The heel counter is a seamless extension of that carbon outsole, wrapping and stabilizing the heel without a separate molded component. It uses controlled flex rather than rigid lockdown, which gives the heel stability without the pressure points that come from stiffer designs. Each CX400 is assembled by hand in Lake's own factory — a point of distinction at this price, where most competitors have moved to automated production lines.
The upper is Clarino microfiber with strategically placed perforations for breathability and structural integrity under load. Lake builds the lateral side from a single piece of Clarino, while the medial side uses a two-piece construction that conforms progressively around the foot as the dual BOA Li2 Push/Pull dials are closed — the result is a more uniform fit across the foot rather than concentrated pressure at a single closure point. Available in White/Black and Black/White, sizes 39 through 50.

Design Benefits
- Integrated carbon heel counter. Rather than bonding a separate heel cup to the sole, Lake forms the heel counter as a direct extension of the 3k carbon outsole. The controlled flex design stabilizes the heel and distributes pressure evenly — a meaningful difference for long rides where a rigid heel cup becomes a problem.
- Race Last in wide width. The Race Last is Lake's fit for high-cadence performance riding — a slimmer, more precise shape than their Sport or Competition lasts. Getting that fit in a wide width means riders with broader feet aren't choosing between a shoe that performs and a shoe that fits.
- Dual BOA Li2 with two-piece medial construction. Two independent dials let you tune instep and forefoot tension separately. The two-piece medial upper construction tightens around the foot's shape as the dials close, rather than pulling from a single point — particularly useful for wide-footed riders who often need differentiated tension across the foot.
- Hand-assembled in Lake's own factory. At $449.99, most cycling shoes at this price are assembled on automated production lines. Each CX400 is built by hand, which is part of why Lake can maintain the precision fit their wide and custom sizing programs require.
