Kestrel Talon SL Frameset Info

The Kestrel Talon SL Frameset comes from a brand with a real claim to carbon fiber history — Kestrel built the first mass-produced all-carbon bicycle frame back in 1986, and the Talon SL carries that engineering focus into a race-oriented road frameset. Sold as a frameset rather than a complete bike, it's built for riders who already know what groupset, wheels, and cockpit they want and are looking for a stiff, well-mannered carbon platform to build around.

The frame is built from 800K high-modulus carbon fiber in a modular monocoque construction, with size-specific tube profiles rather than a single tube shape scaled up or down across sizes. That matters because a frame built this way can keep stiffness and ride quality consistent whether you're on the 48cm or the 60cm, instead of a small frame riding harsher or a large frame flexing more than intended. A semi-sloping top tube keeps the center of gravity low, and Kestrel reinforced the bottom bracket and chainstay areas specifically to improve power transfer under hard pedaling efforts.

The frameset ships with Kestrel's own EMS carbon fork, integrated to match the frame's lines rather than sourced as a generic aftermarket part. Cable routing runs fully internal, with the rear brake cable exiting cleanly at the seatpost binder rather than along the top tube — a detail that keeps the frame looking clean and reduces cable friction compared to fully external routing. The frame uses direct-mount caliper brakes rather than disc, which keeps the frame light and simple for riders building a dedicated rim-brake race bike.

Build-wise, the Talon SL uses a 1 1/8" integrated headset and a 68mm English-thread bottom bracket — a threaded BB that's straightforward to service and free of the creaking issues that can plague press-fit systems. It takes a standard 27.2mm seatpost, with Kestrel's own aero seatpost available as an upgrade, and requires a braze-on front derailleur mount rather than a clamp-on. Geometry is tuned per size, with seat tube angles ranging from 72.5 to 75.25 degrees and head tube angles from 72.75 to 74 degrees across the 48, 55, 57, and 60cm sizes — a spread that keeps smaller frames from feeling twitchy and larger frames from feeling sluggish.

At $550 against a $2,199 retail price, this is a frameset for a rider who wants a genuine race-caliber carbon platform and already has a plan for the build kit. It suits someone assembling a dedicated rim-brake race or club bike, or a rider who has parts on hand from a previous build and wants a stiffer, better-engineered frame to put them on. Available in Red Platinum and Red/White/Blue colorways.

The RA Perspective

We like recommending framesets like the Talon SL to customers who already have a groupset or wheelset sitting around from a previous bike — it's a way to get a genuinely stiff, well-built carbon frame without paying for a full build you don't need. The 800K carbon layup rides firm, in a good way, on hard accelerations and out-of-the-saddle efforts.

Worth knowing upfront: this is a rim-brake frame with direct-mount calipers, not disc. If you're set on hydraulic disc brakes, this isn't the frame for you, but if you're building a dedicated rim-brake race bike or restoring a build around parts you already own, that's not a downside at all.

The threaded 68mm bottom bracket is a small thing that matters more than people expect. We spend far less shop time chasing creaks on threaded BBs than on press-fit frames, so from a long-term ownership standpoint, this frame is genuinely easier to live with.

We'd point this frameset toward a rider comfortable speccing their own build, or someone working with a shop to put together a race bike from parts on hand. It's not the choice for someone who wants a turnkey bike out of the box, but for the right buyer, it's a lot of carbon frame for the price.
