Giro Solara Cycling Shoes Info

The Giro Solara Cycling Shoes are a women's-specific road shoe built around the idea that entry-level shouldn't mean low-quality. Giro designed the Solara with the same fit philosophy as their premium road shoes — a breathable microfiber upper, a micro-ratcheting buckle closure, and a DuPont™ Zytel® nylon outsole — packaged at a price accessible to riders who are new to clipless pedals or building their first road kit.

The closure system pairs a micro-ratcheting buckle with an offset mid-foot strap — the "D-ring" positioning moves the strap anchor point to distribute pressure more evenly across the top of the foot, eliminating the hotspot that a centered strap can create on longer rides. The buckle is replaceable, which matters on a shoe you're likely to put a lot of miles on before moving up. The molded EVA footbed provides medium arch support with Aegis® anti-microbial treatment to keep things fresh across back-to-back ride days.

The DuPont™ Zytel® nylon outsole is the performance centerpiece — a material engineered for stiffness-to-weight efficiency that Giro uses across multiple price points in their lineup. A stiffer sole means more of your pedaling effort goes into the drivetrain rather than flexing through the shoe, which is the fundamental efficiency argument for a dedicated cycling shoe. Three-bolt road cleat compatibility (Look/SPD-SL pattern) covers the standard road pedal systems. Available in Gunmetal and White/Silver, weighing 270g per shoe at size 39.

Design Benefits

  1. DuPont™ Zytel® nylon outsole — engineered for stiffness without excessive weight; more of your effort goes into the pedals rather than flexing through the sole
  2. Offset D-ring mid-foot strap — repositioned anchor point distributes strap pressure more evenly across the foot, reducing hotspots on longer rides
  3. Replaceable buckle — if the closure wears or breaks, you can replace just the buckle rather than the shoe
  4. Aegis® anti-microbial footbed — keeps odor in check across repeated use without requiring special care
  5. Women's-specific geometry — last and volume designed around women's foot shape for a more precise fit than a unisex shoe in the same category

The RA Perspective

The Solara is the shoe we'd hand to someone who's just committed to road cycling and wants a real cycling shoe without spending $150 or more. The DuPont Zytel nylon outsole is the key feature — it's the same material Giro uses in pricier shoes, and it's genuinely stiff in a way that entry-level shoes with softer soles aren't. You feel the difference on climbs and sustained efforts.

The offset D-ring mid-foot strap is a detail worth noting. Most budget road shoes use a simple center-mounted strap that creates a pressure ridge across the top of the foot. Moving the D-ring to an offset position spreads that pressure more evenly, which matters a lot on rides over an hour. The micro-ratcheting buckle gives you precise adjustment in small increments rather than jumping between closure positions.

The women's-specific last means the fit is actually designed for women's feet rather than a standard last with a different colorway — narrower heel, appropriate volume in the toebox. If you've been riding in regular shoes or flat pedals and are making the move to clipless road pedals, the Solara is a sensible first shoe. It won't hold you back as you develop, and it won't punish your budget while you figure out what you actually want from a road shoe.
