The Shimano XTR FD-M985 XC Top-Swing Front Derailleur is built specifically for XTR Race double cranks and their 10-speed HG-X asymmetrical chain — and that specificity matters. Cage radius, plate shape, and cage length are all engineered to match the chain ring sizes and total range of the Race crankset. Pair it with hardware it wasn't designed for and you'll pay for it in chain drag and sluggish shifts.
The M985's top-swing, low-clamp design makes it well-suited to full suspension frames where a lower mounting position on the seat tube clears pivots and linkages that would otherwise conflict with a traditional down-swing derailleur. The limit screws are angled into the linkage mechanism for straightforward access from the drive side — a detail that pays off during setup on complicated suspension designs. This variant ships in the E-Type configuration, which mounts directly to the bottom bracket shell, and includes the Dual-Pull lever arm so it works with both top-tube and down-tube cable routing.
