Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 C60 Disc Wheel Front Info

The Shimano Dura-Ace 9270 C60 Disc Wheel Front is built for the moments where a road race is decided: flat run-ins, time trial efforts, and full-gas sprints where every watt of stiffness and every gram of drag matters. It's the deepest rim in Shimano's Dura-Ace R9200-series wheel lineup, sitting above the C36 and C50 for riders who prioritize aerodynamic efficiency over all-around versatility. Shimano now sells this generation of 12-speed Dura-Ace wheels as individual front and rear units rather than only as a set, which means you can pair this front wheel with whatever rear you're already running or build out a full C60 wheelset over time.

The rim itself is full carbon, 60mm deep, and shaped around Shimano's D2 profile, a wind-tunnel-developed cross-section designed to cut drag across yaw angles from 0 to 15 degrees, which covers most of the crosswind conditions you'll actually encounter on a flat road wheel. It measures 21mm internally and 28mm externally, a hooked tubeless-ready design that lines up best with 26-30mm tires while still accommodating anything from 25mm up to 32mm. Tubeless rim tape and valves come pre-installed, so setup is a matter of mounting tires and adding sealant rather than prepping the rim from scratch.

What separates the C60 from the rest of the Dura-Ace wheel range is the front hub itself. Shimano gave this wheel a dedicated hub design that runs the OPTBAL 2:1 spoke pattern, a lacing layout that's far more common on rear wheels than front ones. Combined with 24 stainless steel straight-pull spokes at 1.8mm, up from the 1.5mm spokes on the previous generation, the result is a front wheel with noticeably more lateral rigidity than a conventional radial or 2-cross build. Shimano markets this as the "HR," or High-Rigidity, version of the wheel, claiming a 20% increase in lateral stiffness aimed at powerful riders and sprinters who load up a front wheel hard under braking and cornering at speed. The hub itself carries Dura-Ace's usual details: a forged and machined aluminum shell, oversized anodized aluminum axle, angular-contact loose-ball stainless steel bearings, and a Center Lock disc rotor mount, all fully serviceable rather than sealed and disposable.

At 751 grams, the wheel is light for how stiff it rides, and that combination is the whole point of the C60: a deep-section aero rim that doesn't flex away power when you stand up and sprint or drive hard through a corner at speed. Shimano tested the wheel with its sponsored professional road teams before bringing it to market, and it shows in how directly the front end tracks under load. This is a wheel for riders who spend real time on flat terrain, in time trials, or at the front of a fast group, where aerodynamic drag and stiffness under power matter more than climbing weight. Paired with a Dura-Ace R9270 groupset and a matching C60 rear wheel, it rounds out a wheelset built specifically for speed on the flats.

The RA Perspective

We see the C60 front wheel land on bikes built for one job: going fast on flat ground. The 60mm D2 rim is deep enough that you notice the aero benefit on a fast group ride or flat time trial, and Shimano's decision to give this specific wheel its own hub and OPTBAL 2:1 spoke pattern is the more interesting engineering story here. Most front wheels don't need a 2:1 lacing pattern because the front hub doesn't have to deal with dish from a cassette, but Shimano used it anyway to chase extra lateral stiffness, and riders who load up the front end hard in corners or during standing sprints will feel that rigidity.

The tradeoff is that a wheel this deep and this stiff isn't the one we'd reach for on a hilly century or a mixed-terrain day. At 60mm, crosswinds on exposed bridges or open roads are noticeable, even with Shimano's D2 profile doing real work to tame them. This is a wheel that rewards flat, fast riding and punishes you a little on days when the wind picks up or the road tilts uphill for long stretches.

Setup is straightforward since the tubeless tape and valve come preinstalled, and the 21mm internal width plays nicely with the 28-30mm tires most riders are already running on race bikes. We'd point this wheel toward time trialists, triathletes, and criterium or flat-road sprinters who want a front-specific upgrade without committing to a full wheelset purchase right away.

For most of our customers building out a Dura-Ace R9270 build for flat racing, this is the wheel we'd spec first.
