Cervelo R5 Frameset Info
Cervelo R5 Frameset is Cervélo's lightweight climbing and all-round race platform, sold here as a frameset for riders who want to build up their own electronic-drivetrain road bike around it. At $6,500, it includes the frame, fork, one-piece carbon cockpit, and carbon seatpost, everything you need to start a build except the groupset, wheels, and saddle.
Weight is the story with this generation of the R5. Cervélo says the frame alone weighs just 651 grams and the fork 298 grams in a size 56, figures that put a complete R5 build well under the UCI's 6.8kg minimum weight limit for competition bikes. That kind of frame weight only matters if the bike can still handle real racing loads, so the R5 pairs that light frame with a design meant to stay stiff enough to transfer power under hard accelerations and hold its line on fast, technical descents, not just climb well on paper. The frameset is built for electronic drivetrains only, so mechanical shifting isn't an option here, and the bottom bracket uses Cervélo's BBRight standard.
The R5 platform has been part of Cervélo's lineup for more than two decades, going back to the record-setting R5CA, and it's continued to show up in professional racing since. Cervélo points to Wout van Aert's stage win on Mont Ventoux and Pauline Ferrand-Prévot's win at the Tour de France Femmes as recent proof that this generation of the R5 holds up at the top level of the sport, not just in marketing copy. Cervélo built the R5 with the high mountains of races like the Tour de France and the steep climbs of the Vuelta a España specifically in mind, on the logic that a mountain bike needs to accelerate quickly, climb efficiently, and descend with confidence, not just be light for its own sake.
This frameset comes with Cervélo's one-piece carbon cockpit, which the brand says was responsible for a significant part of the weight savings on this generation of the R5. Because a one-piece bar and stem can't be swapped the way a traditional two-piece setup can, Cervélo offers 15 different size combinations, and an authorized retailer fits the correct one at no additional cost when you buy. The frameset also includes a Cervélo SP33 carbon seatpost, an FSA integrated headset, aero thru-axles front and rear, and front and rear accessory mounts for a computer or additional storage. The front derailleur mount is a braze-on design, which is worth knowing if you're speccing an electronic groupset with a clamp-style front derailleur.
This R5 frameset is available in Five Black/Bronze and Five Black/Silver across six frame sizes from 48cm to 61cm. For a rider building a dedicated climbing or all-round race bike around their own choice of electronic groupset and wheels, rather than buying a complete build, the R5 frameset is Cervélo's answer to how light and stiff that bike can be.
