Giro Aerohead MIPS Aero Helmet Info
The Giro Aerohead helmet was a new direction for time trial helmets. The addition of the MIPS system keeps it on the cutting edge.
First, the Aerohead. The days of the long-tail aero helmet are over. Great for the wind-tunnel, wanting in real life. They work best for people with a super low position and flat backs, and are able to hold their head in a single position for long periods of time. So a wider front and shorter back were designed because they were faster in real world conditions. This Aerohead also has four external vents, two intake, two exhaust, and extensive internal channeling. This is the coolest of the Aeroheads available, making it great for anyone who needs an aero helmet in the summer, or finds the bike segments to run long. Weight is 450g
A wind shield also makes your helmet faster. This is both about aerodynamics and protecting your eyes. And unlike eye shields of old, this is far enough from your face that you can wear glasses underneath or not. the shield attaches with magnets, and be flipped upside down and stick to the helmet with a second set of magnets under the shell. The shield is grey, all-condition medium tint from Zeiss that is finished with an emotion-hiding silver flash coat. Vents at the top of the shield let in enough air to keep your brow dry and your eyes free of sweat. Giro also makes an accessory shield, not included, that’s clear for low light conditions.
The shield-friendly design also helps make the helmet more durable than earlier long-tail designs. This is not one where you should lug around the included box for fear of crushing the tail or ears.
MIPS is short for Multi-Impact Protection System, and it allows for the helmet to rotate a bit when your head impacts the ground. This reduces rotational friction, which can protect your head. It is underneath the Roc Loc Air retention system, which itself holds your head away from the helmet, improving airflow, and helping keep your head cool.
The Giro Aerohead MIPS helmet is the new shape of speed.
