Cervelo Soloist Rival AXS Bike Info

The Cervelo Soloist Rival AXS Bike carries one of cycling's more storied names. The original Soloist was the race bike of choice for World Tour teams including CSC and the Cervelo Test Team in the early 2000s — a bike that made the then-novel case that aerodynamics mattered on road bikes, not just time trial machines. The revived Soloist reintroduces that philosophy with modern carbon construction, positioned deliberately between Cervelo's R5 climbing bike and S5 aero road bike. Cervelo describes it as a hair lighter than the S5 and significantly more aerodynamic than the R5 — not a compromise between the two, but a different answer to the question of what one high-performance road bike should be. At $6,700, the Rival AXS build makes that platform accessible without stripping the spec down to the point of meaninglessness.

The carbon frame uses aerodynamically shaped tube profiles developed alongside the S5, but the handling geometry is taken directly from the R5 — a bike long regarded for its precision and confidence on descents. That geometry gives the Soloist predictable cornering and stable steering at speed, which matters most when a hard climb gives way to a technical descent. The bottom bracket uses a BBright T47 threaded standard, a wider-than-normal shell that stiffens the pedaling interface without sacrificing serviceability, the same approach Cervelo uses on the R5-CX. Cable routing runs fully internal through the frame and into the Cervelo ST36 stem, and the Cervelo SP27 Carbon seatpost handles the rear. Tire clearance extends to 34mm, which keeps the bike usable on rougher training roads without asking for a separate wet-weather build. The fork is Cervelo's all-carbon design.

Shifting is handled by SRAM Rival AXS E1 front and rear derailleurs — SRAM's 12-speed wireless electronic groupset. Rival AXS operates on the same eTap protocol and battery system as Force and Red AXS, meaning the wireless interface, shift logic, and ergonomics are consistent across the hierarchy. The crankset is a SRAM Rival AXS E1 with an integrated power meter, which means watt data comes with the bike rather than as a separate purchase. Chainrings run 48/35, paired to a SRAM Rival D1 10-36 cassette — a wide-range cassette that handles meaningful climbing without spreading the high end so far that flat-road gearing becomes awkward. The SRAM DUB T47 BBRight bottom bracket pairs to the frame's threaded shell. Braking comes from SRAM Rival AXS E1 hydraulic disc calipers with SRAM Paceline Centerlock rotors.

The wheelset is Reserve 40/44 carbon — 40mm deep at the front, 44mm at the rear — both tubeless-compatible and thru-axle. Reserve develops these wheels using their Turbulent Aero program, which uses real-world wind data to tune rim profiles for actual riding conditions rather than controlled tunnel angles. At these depths, the profile is manageable in crosswinds while the carbon construction keeps weight honest. The hubs are Reserve's own 4-pawl design. Tires are Vittoria Corsa N.EXT TLR G2.0 in 700x29, Vittoria's tubeless-ready race tire built for a balance of speed and puncture resistance over long distances. The handlebar is the Cervelo HB13 Carbon — a carbon bar that matches the frame's aero profile and saves weight at the touch-point compared to alloy alternatives at this price.

The Soloist is for the rider who trains consistently, races when the calendar allows, and isn't willing to maintain two separate bikes to cover both. The geometry and tire clearance make it usable year-round and in mixed conditions, while the frame profile and wireless drivetrain keep it sharp enough for race day. Cervelo's own framing for the bike is direct: it's designed for someone who can only justify one high-performance road bike. The Rival AXS build comes in Dark Slate and Serpentine across six sizes from 48cm to 61cm. Pedals are not included.

The RA Perspective

The Soloist sits in a genuinely useful part of the market — not a compromised middle, but a deliberate design that gives you most of what the S5 does aerodynamically with the handling character of the R5. That combination is harder to find than it sounds. Most bikes claiming to split the difference between aero and climbing end up mediocre at both. The Soloist doesn't feel like that. It handles confidently enough to push on a descent without second-guessing the front end, and the aero advantage over a pure climbing bike is real enough to make a difference on flat or rolling terrain.

The SRAM Rival AXS drivetrain is genuinely capable. It shifts on the same eTap protocol as Force and Red AXS, so the ergonomics and reliability are consistent — it's just built a little heavier. For most riders the weight difference isn't noticeable in daily use. Having the power meter integrated into the crankset at this price point is a real bonus; you're not buying a bike and then budgeting another few hundred to add one.

The Reserve 40/44 wheels are honest performers. Not the flashiest carbon option, but tubeless-ready, properly engineered, and well-matched to the frame's balance of aero and weight.

One honest note: the alloy stem is the most obvious component that would get swapped on a focused race build. Everything else — carbon bar, carbon fork, carbon seatpost, wireless drivetrain — is race-ready. The stem is where Cervelo trimmed the spec to hit the price point, and it's an easy first upgrade if the rider wants to go deeper.

For someone looking for one carbon road bike that works across training and racing without asking for compromise in either direction, the Soloist Rival AXS is a strong argument.
