Campagnolo's founding story is one of cycling's best-documented: in the late 1920s, Tullio Campagnolo was racing in the Dolomites when frozen wing nuts on his rear wheel cost him the race. He went home and invented the quick-release skewer, patenting it in 1930 and establishing Campagnolo SRL in Vicenza in 1933. By 1949 the Gran Sport parallelogram rear derailleur had arrived — the mechanical architecture that every derailleur manufacturer still uses today. Campagnolo also established the "gruppo" concept: matched drivetrain components designed as a coordinated system rather than individual parts.
