Cervelo Aspero Apex 1 Bike Info

Cervelo Aspero Apex 1 Bike puts Cervelo's race-bred aero thinking into a gravel platform built for long days off pavement. The Aspero first arrived in 2019 as one of the bikes that helped define modern gravel racing, and the current version keeps that fast, race-oriented character while adding a threaded bottom bracket, cleaner cable routing, and a UDH-compatible derailleur hanger. This Apex 1 build brings the carbon frame and full-carbon fork down to $3,750, paired with a mechanical SRAM Apex 1 drivetrain built to take a beating on rough roads without complaint.

Cervelo frames the Aspero's aerodynamics less as a way to chase raw speed and more as a way to conserve energy over a long gravel race — the idea being that watts saved fighting a headwind add up over hours in the saddle. The redesign also dropped the seat stays slightly to add compliance out back and eased front-end stiffness just enough to keep the last few hours of a long ride from beating up your hands and shoulders. Between the dropped stays, Cervelo opened up extra mud clearance around the 700x45mm tires, borrowing lessons learned from the R5-CX cyclocross platform and a muddy edition of the Unbound gravel race. Geometry stays consistent across the size run, with a 71 to 72-degree head tube angle and 425mm chainstays regardless of frame size, so the handling character carries through from the 48cm up to the 61cm.

The frame uses Cervelo's asymmetrical T47a threaded bottom bracket, a design the brand first developed for the R5-CX. It delivers the stiffness of a press-fit BBRight bottom bracket shell in a threaded, rider-serviceable interface — no bearing press required when it's time for maintenance. Paired with the UDH-compatible derailleur hanger, the frame is built to stay current with drivetrain standards for years, even on a build like this one that runs a mechanical, non-Transmission SRAM Apex 1 groupset rather than one of SRAM's electronic options.

That SRAM Apex 1 D1 groupset is a single-ring, 12-speed mechanical setup built around a 46-tooth chainring and a wide-range PG-1210 Eagle cassette, giving you enough low-end gearing to grind up loose climbs without a front derailleur to manage. SRAM Apex D1 hydraulic disc brakes with Centerline Centerlock rotors handle stopping duty in whatever conditions a gravel ride throws at you. Vision Team 30 Disc wheels, tubeless-compatible with a 27mm internal width, are wrapped in WTB Vulpine tires at 700x45mm — a fast-rolling tread suited to mixed gravel and dirt roads rather than technical singletrack. Cervelo's own alloy cockpit, the ST36 stem and HB23 handlebar, keeps weight and cost in check without giving up the frame's race geometry, and a Fizik Vento Argo X5 saddle rounds out the contact points.

Cervelo also includes a Smartpak top tube storage bag and a front computer/accessory mount standard on this build, both useful for carrying snacks or a phone and mounting a computer or light without buying extra hardware. Between the frame's race pedigree, the wide gearing range, and the tubeless-ready wheel and tire package, the Aspero Apex 1 works equally well as a gravel racer or a dependable bike for exploring backroads on a weekend. It's the entry point into a platform that's been raced at the front of major gravel events, built here around a durable, easy-to-maintain mechanical groupset instead of a pricier electronic one.

The RA Perspective

We like the Aspero Apex 1 as a starting point for someone who wants to race gravel or just ride long days off pavement without committing to an electronic groupset yet. The mechanical SRAM Apex 1 setup is simple to live with — easy to adjust at home, easy to find parts for, and one less thing to charge before a big ride.

On rough roads, the frame's dropped seat stays take the edge off washboard and chatter without feeling vague, and the tubeless-ready Vision wheels and 45mm WTB tires give you room to run lower pressure for extra grip and comfort. The alloy cockpit and Vision Team 30 wheels are where Cervelo kept costs down compared to the carbon-equipped builds higher in the Aspero lineup, and riders who want to save weight later have an easy upgrade path there.

The gearing on this build leans toward climbing and endurance riding rather than flat-out speed — fine for most gravel terrain, though riders doing a lot of fast, rolling routes might eventually want a bigger chainring. The threaded T47a bottom bracket is a nice touch for anyone who does their own wrenching.

We'd point this bike toward a rider getting into gravel racing seriously for the first time, or someone who wants one bike that can handle a century on pavement one weekend and a muddy gravel event the next.
