Zipp 302 Carbon Clincher Disc Rear Wheel Info

The Zipp 302 Carbon Clincher Disc Rear Wheel brings Zipp's carbon aero wheel engineering to an accessible price point, sold individually as a rear wheel for riders replacing a damaged wheel, building a custom front-and-rear pairing, or stepping into carbon wheel technology from a brand that's been building aero wheels since 1988. At $449.99, the 302 sits at the entry point of Zipp's carbon lineup — the engineering carries over from their higher-end wheels, even if the depth and finish are dialed back for value.

The rim is full carbon fiber, built to a 45mm depth with a 16.25mm internal width and 25.6mm external width — a profile chosen to balance aerodynamic gains with predictable handling in crosswinds, rather than chasing the deepest possible section at the cost of stability. It's a disc-specific design and a clincher construction, built for riders running standard clincher tires rather than tubulars or a tubeless-specific setup.

Zipp built the wheel around their 176D hub, using a centerlock interface for disc rotor mounting and an adaptable endcap system that switches between 12x135mm and 12x142mm rear thru-axle standards. That flexibility matters if you're moving the wheel between bikes or upgrading a frame down the line — the same wheel can follow you rather than becoming obsolete with a single axle spec.

Spokes are 24-count Sapim CX Sprint, a J-bend design laced in a 2x/2x crossing pattern with brass secure-lock nipples. Sapim's CX Sprint spokes are a proven choice for a wheel that needs to hold tension reliably under repeated hard efforts — the kind of detail that shows up as long-term durability rather than something you notice on day one. The crossed lacing pattern spreads load across the wheel rather than concentrating it, which matters more on a rear wheel that absorbs the bulk of a rider's power output.

Total weight comes in at 910 grams for the rear wheel alone, with a 250-pound max rider weight rating that covers the vast majority of riders without qualification. Valve extenders and rim tape ship with the wheel, and it's available in Black or White to match either a stealth build or a cleaner, brighter aesthetic. For a rider upgrading from a stock alloy wheel, replacing a wheel lost to a crash or warranty issue, or building a disc-brake road bike around dependable carbon aero performance without paying for Zipp's flagship depth and finish, the 302 rear wheel is a straightforward way into real carbon wheel engineering.

The RA Perspective

The 302 is Zipp's way of putting real carbon wheel engineering within reach, and the parts they didn't cut corners on are the ones that matter most day to day. The 176D hub and its adaptable endcaps are the detail we'd highlight first — being able to run either 12x135mm or 12x142mm thru-axle means this wheel isn't locked to one bike, which is a real consideration if you tend to keep wheels longer than frames.

At 45mm, the rim depth is a sensible middle ground. It's deep enough to feel a real aerodynamic benefit on flatter rides, but it won't get pushed around in crosswinds the way a deeper 60mm-plus section can on an exposed climb or a gusty day. That makes it a wheel you can run as your primary setup rather than swapping in only for calm-weather race days.

Since this is sold as a rear wheel only, plan on pairing it with a matching front or an existing wheel you're happy with — it's a solid option for replacing a single damaged wheel rather than starting a wheelset from scratch. The Sapim CX Sprint spoke build has held up well for us on wheels we've seen in this build over repeated seasons of use.

We'd point this one toward a disc-brake road rider who wants dependable carbon performance without paying for Zipp's deepest, most race-specific wheels.
