HED H3 Tubular Rear Wheel Info

The HED H3 Tubular Rear Wheel is one of the more recognizable shapes in time trial and triathlon racing — a tri-spoke wheel built around three airfoil-section carbon blades instead of a conventional spoke count. In place of the usual web of spokes, the H3 gives you a solid, deep aero profile with smooth transitions between the roughly 54mm rim depth and the blades themselves, a design HED has refined for decades of non-drafting racing where every second against the clock matters.

That blade shaping is the point. HED built the H3 to hold its speed across headwind, crosswind, and tailwind conditions rather than excelling in one and losing ground in the others — a meaningful distinction on a TT or triathlon course where wind direction rarely cooperates for an entire effort. The rim measures a narrow 19mm at the brake track, which HED points to as narrow enough to clear the tightest frame designs without rubbing, a detail that matters more than it sounds like it would when you're set up in an aggressive aero position on race morning.

Tubular construction is a deliberate choice here, not an afterthought. A glued tubular tire holds its bead more securely at speed and through fast cornering than a clincher setup can, and the format lets HED keep total wheel weight down without sacrificing the rim's structural integrity. The rear wheel comes in at 880 grams — genuinely light for a wheel with this much aero profile — and HED offers the H3 in either an alloy rim cap or a full carbon build, depending on how you want to balance weight, cost, and braking feel.

Every H3 ships with a titanium skewer and ratchet ring, and the wheel is available in 700c or 650c depending on your frame and fit, with a dedicated track configuration also offered for velodrome use. HED rates the wheel for riders up to 250 pounds, which covers the vast majority of racers who'd be reaching for a wheel like this in the first place.

The H3 makes the most sense for a time trial specialist or triathlete already committed to tubular tires and looking for the fastest wheel option outside of a full disc — someone racing against the clock on a course with real wind exposure, not a rider looking for an all-around training wheel. If that's the kind of racing you're doing, the H3's aero profile and tri-spoke design have earned their place in the sport for a reason.

The RA Perspective

The H3's tri-spoke design is one of those wheels that's been around long enough to prove itself — this isn't a new aero concept, it's a shape HED has been refining since the era when tri-spokes were the standard for serious time trial and triathlon racing, and it's stuck around because it still works.

What we like most is the weight relative to the aero profile. An 880 gram rear wheel with this much depth and blade surface area is genuinely impressive, and it's a direct result of going tubular rather than clincher. The tradeoff is that tubular tires require gluing, which is more work and more commitment than a clincher setup — not a wheel to buy if you're not already comfortable with tubular mounting or willing to have a shop do it for you.

The narrow 19mm brake track is a small detail that matters more than people expect. If you're on a frame with tight clearances, especially an aggressive aero TT frame, that narrow profile can be the difference between a wheel that fits and one that rubs under load.

This is a wheel for someone racing seriously against the clock — triathlon, time trial, anything non-drafting where aero consistency across wind conditions actually shows up in your split times. It's not the wheel we'd point a casual road rider toward, but for the right racer, it's hard to beat at this price.
