Cervelo Caledonia-5 Frameset Info

The Cervelo Caledonia-5 Frameset is a carbon road frame built for long-distance racing — the kind of riding where sustaining high speed for hours matters as much as a fast finish. Cervelo has been building road frames at the front of professional racing since 1995, and the Caledonia was introduced in 2020 to apply that engineering rigor to a different performance context: the ultra-distance ride, the extended gravel race, the long back-road day that doesn't end at three hours. The Caledonia-5 takes that foundation further with a fully internal cable routing system, in-frame storage, dropped seatstays for vertical compliance, and a stiffer downtube to preserve the precise power transfer Caledonia riders rely on. At $5,000, this is the frameset version — the way to build a Caledonia-5 around your own drivetrain and wheel choice.

What Changes from the Standard Caledonia

What separates the Caledonia-5 from the standard Caledonia starts with cable routing. Every shift cable and brake hose runs fully internal from bar to caliper, with no external housing visible at the head tube, along the down tube, or through the rear triangle. This matters aerodynamically, and it matters for the clean, integrated look that an all-carbon cockpit demands. The aero tube profiles work in combination with that hidden routing — shaped to reduce drag without compromising the ride characteristics Cervelo targets for endurance use. The in-frame storage compartment is a feature Cervelo first introduced on the P-Series and brought over here: a cavity inside the downtube sized for a tube, a small multi-tool, and a CO2 canister, with a latch that opens with gloved hands. For long solo rides or self-supported events, it's a meaningful detail — the emergency kit is on the bike and out of the way until needed. The dropped seatstays, a design approach Cervelo also uses on the Aspero, lower the stay connection point to allow more vertical flex in the rear triangle. Cervelo pairs that compliance with a stiffer downtube, keeping the front-end response sharp during climbs and accelerations.

Carbon Cockpit and Components

The Caledonia-5 Frameset ships with components that the standard Caledonia doesn't include. The cockpit is fully carbon: Cervélo ST31 carbon stem and HB13 carbon handlebar with a 31.8mm clamp, compared to the alloy stem and bar on the standard configuration. The seatpost is the SP24 carbon, an upgrade from the SP19 found on base Caledonia builds. Three contact points — bar, stem, and seatpost — all carbon from the factory, which adds up on a frame designed for multi-hour riding. A split bearing cap allows stack height adjustments without the need to bleed hydraulic brakes. Cervelo also includes front and rear accessory mounts for computers and navigation devices, removable fender mounts, and aero thru-axles at 12x100mm and 12x142mm front and rear. The frameset arrives equipped for most riding scenarios without additional component sourcing.

Geometry, Clearance, and Compatibility

Geometry matches the Caledonia-5 complete bike lineup exactly. Chainstays are 415mm across all six sizes (48 through 61cm), and trail holds at 57.8mm throughout the range — handling stays consistent regardless of which size you build. Stack progresses from 505mm on the 48cm to 630mm on the 61cm, with reach from 360mm to 405mm, giving a slightly more upright position than Cervelo's pure race platforms while maintaining full road-racing capability. Tire clearance reaches 36mm, which covers most paved and light gravel routes. The all-carbon tapered fork uses an FSA IS2 headset, and the bottom bracket shell is BBRight. Front derailleur mounting is braze-on. Every Caledonia-5 is UCI approved and comes with Cervelo's lifetime warranty.

Available in Five Black and Carmine, the Caledonia-5 Frameset is the route into the platform for riders who already run a specific groupset, want to transfer components from a current bike, or want to build something that doesn't exist as a stock configuration. Complete Caledonia-5 bikes start at $7,400 for the Rival AXS build and reach $12,750 for the Red AXS — at $5,000, the carbon cockpit and SP24 seatpost are included, so the remaining build is primarily drivetrain and wheels. For riders whose events and training routes are measured in hours rather than minutes, the Caledonia-5 Frameset is the platform Cervelo built specifically for that kind of riding.

The RA Perspective

The Caledonia-5 Frameset is what we'd reach for if we were building a dedicated long-distance race bike and wanted to spec it ourselves. At $5,000, the carbon cockpit is already there — the ST31 stem and HB13 bar are included, the SP24 seatpost is in the box — so the build budget goes toward drivetrain and wheels rather than hardware. That matters if you're carrying components over from another bike or building something specific that doesn't come as a stock configuration.

The changes Cervelo made from the standard Caledonia make practical sense for the intended use. The fully internal routing cleans up the front end, but the bigger benefit on a long ride is that everything is protected and out of the way. The in-frame storage is genuinely small — a tube, a multi-tool, and a CO2, nothing more — but for self-supported riding, it's one less thing stuffed in your back pocket at hour six. The dropped seatstays and stiffer downtube work well together: the rear absorbs road chatter more quietly than a typical Cervelo race frame, but there's no corresponding softness when you're putting down power.

It's worth situating the Caledonia-5 within the range. The Soloist is Cervelo's pure-aero road race bike — tighter geometry, stiffer all around, built for shorter and harder efforts. The Caledonia-5 carries the same race pedigree in a geometry designed for longer work. If your typical ride is four or more hours, or if you're targeting ultra-distance events, this is the more appropriate platform.

We'd build one with Force AXS or Rival AXS and a set of 40mm carbon wheels. That's a capable, durable setup that suits what this frame was designed to do — cover a lot of ground, consistently, at a high pace.
