Assos Bib Shorts - RA Cycles

Assos Bib Shorts

Assos invented the bib short. That's not marketing language — in the 1970s, when the Ticino-based brand developed the first Lycra cycling short and then the first bib design, the peloton was still racing in wool. Once Ti-Raleigh's professional team started wearing them, the rest of the sport followed. At RA Cycles, the Assos bib shorts collection covers the full lineup across every tier and season: the Equipe RSR and RS for race-focused riding, the Equipe R for performance at a step down, the Mille GT and GTS for endurance and long-ride comfort, and the UMA and Dyora lines for women. Summer shorts, spring/fall bibs, winter tights, and Ultraz cold-weather builds are all represented. Prices run from $144 to $500.

Assos Bib Shorts: Lines, Chamois & How to Choose

Assos was founded in the 1970s by Toni Maier-Moussa in the Ticino region of southern Switzerland, near Lake Lugano. The brand's name means "the first, the best" in Greek — chosen by the founder's mother. The first Lycra cycling short, the first bib short, and the first elastic chamois insert all came from Assos. The brand remains a focused Swiss operation of about 70 people, with the same chamois engineering obsession that defined the company from the start.

The choice between the Equipe and Mille lines comes down to chamois width, thickness, and intended ride duration. The Equipe RS chamois is 9mm thin and 175mm wide at the sit bones — tuned for race pace, with 24 ventilation holes punched through the pad for airflow during high-intensity efforts. The Equipe R uses the same chamois construction without the perforations. Both are built for rides under four hours where a thin, low-friction pad supports hard efforts without adding bulk. The Mille GT chamois runs 11–12mm with Shock-Absorb Damping foam and GoldenGate construction — a wider, denser platform at 195mm, designed for five, six, eight-hour days where total time in the saddle is the challenge. The Mille GTS adds enhanced breathability for warm-weather riding; the Mille GTO uses a more open upper structure for additional airflow without altering the chamois underneath. Women's riders have equivalent options in the UMA GT (endurance) and Dyora RS (racing) lines, with chamois geometry designed specifically for women's anatomy.

Every line is available across seasons. Summer builds prioritize airflow and minimal coverage. Spring/Fall bibs add leg coverage and a slightly warmer fabric weight. Winter tights run a full-length thermal construction. Ultraz builds are Assos' answer to sub-zero temperatures — a separate category entirely from the three-season lineup.
