A simple speed and cadence sensor that is pretty much future-proof is a good bet these days. Wahoo Fitness' Blue SC Speed and Cadence Sensor fits that bill.

Blue is for Bluetooth. It is one of the two wireless protocols that that sensor transmits. Bluetooth 4.0 is the first protocol, it's also known as BTLE or BLE for Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth Smart. This can be found in many phones and tablets, and some computers. In terms of phones, it's in iPhone 4S and newer and many Android phones. If you want your phone, tablet, or computer to record your ride, download a compatible app, and your unit turns into a bike computer. The second is ANT+, aka Area Network Technology +. This is already found in countless bike computers, particularly ones that have GPS and read power.

The unit mounts on your bike's left chain stay via a thick, durable rubber band. There's both a main part that houses a 2032 coin-style battery and the cadence sensor, and an adjustable arm that contains the speed sensor. There's a rubber-band-mounted magnet that goes on the left crank arm and a screw-style spoke magnet for a left spoke on the rear wheel.

Once set up, the unit broadcasts both signals for a long time. Figure somewhere between six months to a year of usage before the battery needs to be replaced.

With the speed and cadence sensor set up, you now need an app to gather the information being broadcast. Your phone, tablet, or computer be able to read the signal, and thus you can watch your metrics while your riding, save the ride for later analysis and/or uploading.

The info can go into personal training programs as well as cloud-based training calendars and social media sites, including TrainingPeaks, GarminConnect, Strava, MapMyFitness: basically anything that can read .pwx, .tcx, .csv, .gps, or .wf files.
