THM Tibia Stem Info
When THM decides to build a component, they have to design it so it performs better in every way than other similar components on the market. The same is true of their Tibia Stem, which is an impressive feat of engineering.
The calling card is it’s amazingly light weight. A 100mm version of the stem weighs 78g. But you shouldn’t expect even their longest stem, 120mm, to weigh more than 87g, plus or minus 5%. That means no more than 92g even for the heaviest stem of a batch. One of their ways of keeping weight down was to limit materials, so they eliminated the need for a clear coat. It looks good raw, and if you want it to look better a little satin polish will buff it up, though will add an almost negligible amount of weight.
But it isn’t just light. It’s very stiff torsionally, with a little vertical give thanks to the shape.
And it isn’t just light and stiff, but aero, with a sculpted faceplate and mounting bolts that are set into the plate rather than sticking out.
And more than just light, stiff, and aero, it also damps road vibrations thanks to the carbon-fiber.
And it’s durable, as the carbon isn’t pierced anywhere, but rather molded. The nuts and bolts are made of titanium and aluminum and are slid into place, rather than cut into the carbon. This also means they can take heavy loads, and are replaceable if need be.
The clamp diameter for the handlebars is 31.8mm. The steerer clamp diameter is 1 1/8”. the stack height of the clamp is 40mm. The stem angle is +/- six-degrees. The Tibia is available ins 10mm increments from 80mm to 120mm.
If you’re the kind who wants an out-front computer mount, the Tibia’s faceplate is designed to work with a Bar Fly direct stem mount. It’s called the MAX stem mount and saves you from adding a clamp to your bars as it mounts through the slot on the faceplate.
As the Tibia is a precision-engineered component, read the owner’s manual, all ten pages, before installing. You’ll need a torque wrench, a Torx bit for the wrench, and even to have at least 1mm worth of spacers above the stem.
The THM Tibia Stem is designed for bikes and riders who weigh less than 110kg.
