SRAM S-900 Direct Mount Brake Info
SRAM has a new Direct Mount Brake Caliper so you can match your SRAM shifting with rim braking on your direct mount road bike. Known as the S-900, it has a finish that is designed to match perfectly with the aesthetics of SRAM’s Red components, and has the leverage to mate perfectly not only with Red bake levers, but all of SRAM’s road bike brake levers—Force, Rival, and Apex.
Direct Mount refers to the brake calipers being threaded directly into the frame through nuts embedded in the fork and seat stays above the wheels. The idea came about as a way to both reduce overall bike weight and improve braking power. As the brake caliper is braced by the frame, torsional forces created by braking have less impact on brake performance.
The calipers work in either atop the fork or atop the seatstays. There is no under-the-bottom bracket option. To link the left and right halves of the caliper and keep them centered, there’s an offset synchronizer screw that not only keeps the arms centered but also further stiffens up the caliper against torsional forces.
As this is a modern brake, it is designed to fit up to 28mm wide tires, though there’s a good chance, depending on your tire and rim combination, you could go bigger.
The SRAM S-900 Direct Mount Rim Brake comes with SwissStop Flash Pro brake pads. The quick release is tucked into the arm but easy to access. A single caliper weighs 181g.
