SRAM Red 22 Yaw Front Derailleur Info
Thanks to Yaw technology, SRAM has done the previously impossible: eliminated the need for trimming the front derailleur when going across the range of eleven cogs, whether in the big or small chainring. The Red 22 version of the front derailleur, is the lightest of the breed.
From any angle, this front derailleur looks normal. When you’ve installed it, secured the cable, and then shift, you’ll see the genius. The cage pivots on vertical axis behind where the derailleur secures to the hanger. This way the derailleur is aligned with the chain regardless of which ring your chain is on, and there is no derailleur rub on any of the eleven cogs regardless of ring.
It’s amazing. And what makes it even better, they’ve even imprinted hash marks on the front derailleur cage plates to make setup easy. One in front, one in the back. Just line the marks up with the big ring, and the derailleur is aligned.
Durability is great and shifting is crisp also thanks to material. The outer cage plate is aluminum. It is stiffened by the inner cage plate, which is made of tool steel.
The design is for braze-on front derailleur hangers only. If you need a clamp, you’ll need to source it separately. Interestingly, SRAM also designed and included an aluminum chain guide to hang off the derailleur mounting bolt. That way, if you’re pedaling super-hard, and hit the shift on a super-rough road, neither the bouncing nor torque will cause you to drop the chain, as the guide, which weighs 10.2g, will see to it that the chain drops effortlessly onto the small ring.
Weight for the derailleur is 69g, not including the guide.
The SRAM Red 22 Yaw Front Derailleur is designed to work with all SRAM 11-Speed shifting systems, including Red and Force Double-Tap, and SRAM’s bar-end shifters. They also recommend installing their eleven-speed inner ring and Yaw outer ring.
