Shimano Ultegra 8170 C60 Disc Wheelset Info

The Shimano Ultegra 8170 C60 Disc Wheelset brings Dura-Ace-level aero engineering down to the Ultegra tier, built around a 60mm-deep full carbon rim tuned for flat, fast racing. Shimano developed the C60 alongside its Dura-Ace wheels, so the aerodynamic thinking and layup process trickle down rather than getting simplified for a lower price point. At $1,570, this carbon disc wheelset gives racers and serious club riders a genuine alternative to the Dura-Ace version without asking for Dura-Ace money.

Shimano calls the rim profile "D2," a shape engineered to cut drag across a 0 to 15-degree yaw range — the range most road riders actually experience in real crosswinds and gusty conditions, not just a wind tunnel's straight-ahead test angle. The rim carries a 21mm internal width and 28mm external width, wide enough to properly support 25-32mm tires without the balloon effect that undersized rims create. It's tubeless-ready out of the box, with rim tape and valves pre-installed, so setup is a matter of mounting tires and adding sealant rather than sourcing extra parts.

Each wheel spins on Ultegra R8170 hubs with 12mm thru-axles and Center Lock disc mounts, built around oversized anodized aluminum axles and Shimano's traditional angular-contact, loose-ball bearing system — serviceable and adjustable rather than sealed-and-disposable. The freehub takes 11 and 12-speed Shimano cassettes, and 24 straight-pull, bladed stainless steel spokes per wheel keep things light without sacrificing stiffness. The rear wheel uses Shimano's OPTBAL lacing, an asymmetric spoke pattern that balances tension between the drive and non-drive side to keep the wheel true and rigid despite the offset pull of a disc brake hub.

Shimano's own testing puts the C60 at a meaningful jump in drivetrain rigidity and a reduction in the energy needed to accelerate compared to its previous-generation Ultegra wheelset, and at a claimed 1,649 grams for the pair, it's light enough to matter on rolling terrain without giving up the aero benefit on the flats. That combination — stiff enough to sprint on, aero enough to hold speed, and light enough to climb without complaint — is exactly what the C60 depth is meant to deliver, positioning it as a one-wheelset answer for riders who don't want to choose between a climbing wheel and a time trial wheel.

This build is set up for Shimano's current 12-speed road groupsets, making it a natural upgrade for anyone running Ultegra or Dura-Ace Di2 and looking to move off alloy or a shallower carbon rim. The Ultegra 8170 C60 wheelset ships in black and is in stock for immediate shipping.

The RA Perspective

The Ultegra C60 is the wheelset we point people toward when they want Dura-Ace performance but don't want the Dura-Ace invoice. The D2 rim shape genuinely holds speed better than a shallower alloy or entry carbon wheel once you're above 20 mph, and it stays composed in crosswinds better than older 60mm designs we've sold — the wider 28mm external profile seems to matter here.

Setup is straightforward since the tubeless tape and valves come pre-installed, which saves a step most riders skip anyway. The hubs use Shimano's classic loose-ball bearing system rather than sealed cartridge bearings, which means they're serviceable at home with basic tools, but they also need periodic adjustment and repacking that a fully sealed hub doesn't. That's a fair tradeoff for a wheel built to last rather than get replaced.

At 1,649 grams for the pair, this isn't a dedicated climbing wheel, but it's not meant to be — riders doing mixed terrain rides or crit racing won't notice the weight, and the stiffness under power is noticeable when you're out of the saddle sprinting for a line.

We'd recommend this wheelset for riders upgrading from a stock alloy or shallow carbon wheel who want one set that handles club racing, group rides, and the occasional time trial without needing a second wheel for different terrain.
