The Shimano SH-XC5 Shoes are a bit of everything. They’ve got serious style points, they’ve got a rubber sole, they’ve got toe spikes, they’ve got a carbon-fiber midsole. You’ll be happy riding these on the road on gravel, off road, and in cyclocross races.

Laces in cycling shoes have come back because they work well at micro-adjusting around your feet. They can take a bit longer to get on, but once properly cinched, they can stay in place all day, and thank to the power strop, they extra laces beyond the know stay tamed and in place. shaman even included an extra et of laces to have as spares or to better accessorize.

The laces hold together a synthetic leather upper. The material is supple, stretch-resistant, and barely absorbs water. The material has been extensively perforated to keep your feet from overheating.

The midsole, made of light carbon-fiber, is between stiff and not so stiff. Shimano rates it a 7 on their stiffness scale. More rigidity than an enduro midsole, but less rigid than a full-on cross-country midsole. This is goes for people who need to do light bike hiking, like in ‘cross races, or walking around the cafe post ride, or cycle-touring, or commuting.

The sole rubber has been developed with Michelin. While it covers the entire bottom of the s hoe, the tread blocks are more cross-country oriented, with space between them to let mud and rocks fall out easily. The toes are complemented with threaded spike mounts. the s hoes come standard with super-short 18mm resin spikes, or rather spike-lets, short enough to walk on and still provide some support. You can unthread the bolts with a screwdriver, and replace with any threaded toe spike.
