Shimano brings their shoe expertise to bear on their gravity or AM (all mountain) series shoes. The SH-AM7, featured here, shares several features with the line-leading AM9, but does so with an eye toward value.

The look is similar, though the AM7 is a bit more vented and a bit less armored than the AM9. The outsole is identical, with a soft ultra-grip rubber tread covering the entire bottom for traction when walking, and a deep channel for the two-bolt cleat of your choosing. The difference is in the stiffening shank, which is a bit stiffer than the AM9.

There’s also a molded toe cap for protection, and bumpers on the sides and around the heels to keep the upper from being shredded as you shred.

The upper is made of a durable synthetic upper that is both perforated in the front, and complemented with mesh panels on the sides. The material absorbs little moisture, so will not get wet easily, and will dry quickly once wet. Feet are secured with a two-part system. The first element is laces, which run up the middle of the shoe. These are good for precisely adjusting tension around your feet, so it can work with thick socks or thin, and allow for adjustment when your feet heat up. The shoelace knot is secured, and the lacing system is enhanced by a single hook-and-loop strap just below the ankle. This way, you can really cinch down if you want, and you’ve got some security so that your knot doesn’t come loose or get snagged. As an added benefit, the ankle is covered by stretch mesh band that keeps dirt and gravel out of your shoe.

The shoe is a 6 in Shimano’s stiffness scale, almost as flexible as Shimano currently makes. Weight for a single shoe is 408g in size 42.

The Shimano SH-AM7 Shoes come with a spare set of laces in an alternative color, so you can dress up or tone-down the look.
