Shimano PD-M520 Pedals Info
The Shimano PD-M520 Pedals are more than just affordable. They are direct descendants of the original M737 SPD pedals that were once exotic and expensive when Shimano first introduced them to the MTB world in 1990. That these are far lighter and have a more open, mud shedding design is a testament to refined design and engineering development. What you really get is a darn good set of pedals for less than it costs to buy a decent folding bead tire.
The M520 pedals have an adjustable retention system that can be set to your release preferences with a small hex key on the back of the mechanism - soft for easy release or firm for more security. The pedal body is lightweight aluminum and spins around a tough chromoly spindle on a sealed cup and cone bearing system.
The Shimano PD-M520 Pedals come with two-bolt SM-SH51 Single-Release cleats that offer 4° of float to allow some movement in your ankle as you pedal. They are also compatible with the easier-to-release SM-SH56 Multi-Release cleats. Are there better budget clipless MTB pedals? We think not.
