Pivot Shadowcat Team XTR Bike Info
Some trail bikes ask you to choose between a bike that climbs and a bike that descends. The Pivot Shadowcat Team XTR refuses that conversation. Built around a frame that weighs less than many dedicated XC machines — lighter than Pivot's own Trail 429 and only 45 grams heavier than the Mach 4SL XC racer — this is a 140mm trail bike that accelerates like a lightweight and handles like a bike built for the descent. The 27.5" wheels sharpen the equation further, generating quicker snap and nimbler handling than larger-wheeled alternatives, while Pivot's dw-link™ suspension kinematics ensure those 140mm of rear travel work more like 120mm when you're climbing and exactly like 140mm when you need them.
The frame is built from Hollow Core Carbon — a construction method that keeps weight at a level most XC bikes would envy while maintaining the strength required for genuine trail riding. Pivot's dw-link™ is a patented four-bar linkage that controls anti-squat and anti-rise characteristics independently, giving the suspension the ability to pedal efficiently and descend actively without those two goals working against each other. In practice, the Shadowcat climbs with more snap than a bike carrying 140mm of travel has any right to. The Fox Factory Float DPS manages the rear, while the front runs a Fox Factory 36 with FIT4 damper at 160mm of travel. Geometry reinforces the intent: a 65.8° head tube angle for confident handling on steep terrain, a 76° seat tube angle that positions the rider efficiently over the pedals on the climbs, and 430mm chainstays across all four sizes for consistent cornering feel regardless of frame size.
The Team XTR build runs Shimano's XTR M9100 — the top tier of Shimano's mountain bike lineup — in a 1x12 configuration with a 10-51t cassette through an M9100 SGS rear derailleur. The XTR M9120 brake system delivers 4-piston hydraulic calipers and 180mm CenterLock rotors front and rear: meaningful stopping power for a bike capable of generating meaningful speed. The Race Face Next R crankset carries a 32T chainring, with ISPEC EV integration keeping the cockpit clean. Wheels are Reynolds Blacklabel Low Profile Trail built around Industry Nine hubs at 32mm internal width — a rim-and-hub combination chosen for its light weight and lateral stiffness. Maxxis Dissector 27.5" x 2.4" TR tires run tubeless-ready at the EXO casing level. The Fox Transfer Factory dropper scales with frame size: 125mm in XS, 150mm in S, and 175mm in M and L. The Phoenix Team Low Rise Carbon bar runs 760mm on XS and S, 780mm on M and L.
The Shadowcat is available in XS, S, M, and L with a low standover height that makes smaller sizes genuinely accessible — an unusual characteristic for a trail bike at this performance level. Reach runs from 410mm in XS to 480mm in L, scaling proportionally across the size run. Available in Blue Mirage and Danger Fruit. Pedals are not included.
Design Benefits
- dw-link™ Suspension: Pivot's patented four-bar linkage controls anti-squat and anti-rise independently, so the suspension can pedal like a short-travel bike and descend like it's carrying all 140mm. It's why the Shadowcat climbs faster than most 120mm bikes and still handles trail terrain with authority.
- XC-Weight Carbon Frame: Hollow Core Carbon construction puts the Shadowcat's frame weight in XC territory — lighter than Pivot's Trail 429 and only 45 grams heavier than the Mach 4SL XC racer. Less frame weight means faster acceleration, easier climbing, and a more immediately responsive ride feel.
- Fox Factory Suspension Throughout: The Fox Factory 36 fork, Float DPS shock, and Transfer Factory dropper represent Fox's performance tier across every contact point. Each is spec'd to the Shadowcat's geometry and travel targets — a tuned system, not individual upgrades.
- Full Shimano XTR 12-Speed: XTR M9100 is Shimano's top-tier MTB drivetrain, built for low weight, precise shifts, and long-term durability under hard trail use. The 10-51t range and 32T ring cover everything from steep technical climbs to flat-out trail riding.
- Reynolds Blacklabel / Industry Nine Wheelset: Lightweight Reynolds carbon rims laced to Industry Nine hubs produce a wheel that's stiff, fast, and proportionally matched to the Shadowcat's performance character. The 32mm internal width supports modern tire volume and tubeless setup.
Final Take
The Pivot Shadowcat Team XTR is for riders who've grown tired of the weight-versus-capability compromise that defines most trail bikes. It climbs like a lightweight because it is one, descends with 140mm of well-tuned dw-link travel, and arrives with Fox Factory suspension and a full Shimano XTR drivetrain at every position. The 27.5" wheels and size-inclusive geometry — from XS through L, with a low standover that makes smaller frames genuinely usable — extend the Shadowcat's range further than most bikes at this price point. At $9,899, it's a serious machine built for riders who are serious about what they're asking it to do.
