Lake CX242-X Shoes Info

The Lake CX242-X exists because most cycling shoes are built for an average foot, and a lot of feet aren't average. Lake designed the CX242 as a purpose-built solution for riders with wide feet, bunions, high or low insteps, or other characteristics that make standard shoes painful or ill-fitting. Built on the CX/TX Competition Last in Wide width, it features a 6-zone segmented upper that can be fine-tuned independently across different areas of the foot — relieving pressure from specific sensitive spots without loosening the entire shoe. The upper is available in fullgrain leather or Clarino Microfiber, both with NuFoam lining for cushioning and comfort over long rides.

The Competition Last geometry sets the CX242-X apart from Lake's Race Last models. It features a curved profile with increased toe pitch and heel lift, a tighter heel pocket, and a slightly wider ball girth designed to accommodate the foot's natural tendency to expand under sustained pedaling pressure. This is the last Lake uses when fit complexity is the priority — not the slimmest or most aggressive profile, but the one engineered to work with a wider range of foot shapes without compromise. The heat-moldable heel counter adds another layer of customization, allowing the carbon fiber heel structure to be softened and shaped to your specific heel geometry for a locked-in hold that eliminates slip.

Carbon fiber support panels and Carbitex reinforcements throughout the upper maintain structure around the closure system, while the Lake Competition carbon fiber outsole delivers efficient power transfer with a standard 3-hole cleat pattern. Closure is handled by BOA Li2 dials — the same bidirectional, micro-adjustable hardware found on Lake's flagship models.

Design Benefits

  1. 6-zone segmented upper — Independent panels across the forefoot, midfoot, and instep let you dial in fit zone by zone. Wide forefoot with a secure instep, pressure relief over a bunion without loosening the heel — adjustments that a single-piece upper can't make.
  2. Competition Last in Wide — The curved profile with toe pitch and heel lift accommodates feet that expand under load, making the CX242-X one of the most comfortable full-carbon road shoes for riders who have struggled with pressure and hot spots in stiffer, narrower lasts.
  3. Heat-moldable heel counter — Custom-shape the heel structure to your foot for a hold that feels built for you, not for a generic sizing average. A secure heel eliminates the micro-movements that compound into fatigue on long rides.
  4. Full carbon sole at this price — At $419.99, the CX242-X brings a Lake Competition carbon fiber outsole to riders who need a fit-focused shoe — no compromise on stiffness or power transfer to get the accommodating upper.

The RA Perspective

The CX242-X is the shoe we reach for when a customer walks in and says they've never found a cycling shoe that doesn't hurt. That's not an exaggeration — this is Lake's dedicated solution for hard-to-fit feet, and it's genuinely different from the rest of the lineup. Most performance cycling shoes are built on a relatively narrow template and then offered in wide widths as an afterthought. The CX242-X was designed from the beginning for feet that don't conform.

The 6-zone segmented upper is the feature that sets it apart. Instead of one continuous piece of material across the forefoot and instep, the upper is divided into independent sections that can be adjusted relative to each other. A rider with a wide forefoot and a low instep can accommodate both without the usual trade-offs. A rider with bunions can relieve pressure at that specific point without creating slack elsewhere. It's a level of fit adjustment that most shoes in this price range don't offer.

The Competition Last geometry is worth understanding before you order. It has more volume than the Race Last — more toe pitch, heel lift, and ball girth. For a lot of wide-footed riders, that's exactly what they need. But if you're coming from a Race Last shoe and expecting the same snug feel, the CX242 will fit differently. We'd always recommend a proper fit before purchasing.

At $419.99 with BOA Li2 hardware and a full carbon outsole, the CX242-X makes a strong case for riders who've been tolerating uncomfortable shoes because they assumed fit accommodation meant giving up performance.
