Formula Rim Brake QR 700c Wheel - Front Info

The Formula Rim Brake QR 700c Wheel - Front pairs a double-wall alloy rim with a Formula-brand quick-release hub, built by Wheel Shop — the house wheel brand of HLC, the North American bicycle parts distributor formed from the 2010 merger of Cycles Lambert (founded in 1945) and The Hawley Company. It's built as a dependable replacement wheel for 700c bikes running rim brakes, rather than a performance upgrade.

The rim is Wheel Shop's Evo E-Tour 19, a double-wall aluminum rim in black with a 19mm inner width. Double-wall construction resists dents and flex better than a single-wall rim, which matters on a wheel that's likely replacing a bent or damaged original. The rim uses pin-joint construction and is drilled for 36 spokes, laced with stainless steel spokes for corrosion resistance and easy servicing at any shop.

Up front is a Formula FM-21-QR hub, spaced for a 100mm quick-release front axle and built for rim brake compatibility — no disc mounts here, so it's a straightforward swap onto any 700c bike currently running caliper or V-brakes. The wheel is set up for a Schrader valve, matching the tube and pump hardware most riders already have.

At $52.99, this is an entry-level, no-frills wheel meant to get a 700c bike back on the road — whether that's replacing a bent rim, a worn hub, or an original wheel that's simply worn out. It's a fit for commuters, hybrid bikes, and road bikes running rim brakes, rather than a wheel built to shave weight or improve stiffness.

The RA Perspective

We like that this one uses a double-wall rim instead of single-wall — for a replacement wheel, that added rim strength means fewer trued-out or dented rims down the line, especially on a bike ridden regularly in city traffic or over rough pavement.

The tradeoff is that this is still a basic hub and rim combination, not something built for performance riding. The Formula FM-21-QR hub is a functional, serviceable quick-release hub, not a high-engagement or sealed-bearing unit you'd find on a mid-range or upgrade wheel.

We'd reach for this wheel when a customer needs an affordable, drop-in replacement for a 700c rim-brake bike — a commuter, hybrid, or entry-level road bike — rather than as an upgrade for someone looking to improve ride quality.
