Colnago V3 Disc Rival AXS Bike Info

The Colnago V3 Disc Rival AXS Bike is the accessible entry point into Colnago's race frame lineup — sharing its silhouette, geometry philosophy, and carbon construction approach with the V3Rs that Tadej Pogačar rode to Tour de France victory, at a fraction of the cost. Colnago has been building road bikes in Cambiago, Italy since 1954, and the V3 carries that heritage in ways that go beyond marketing: the top tube's characteristic T-shaped cross-section is a direct visual reference to the legendary Master, C40, and C64 frames. For riders who care about that lineage and want a race-oriented machine built by a brand that has been on the podium of cycling's biggest races across seven decades, the V3 is the most accessible path in.

The V3's frame uses aero-optimized tube shapes without committing to the weight penalty of a dedicated aero road bike. Colnago positions it alongside bikes like the Cannondale SuperSix EVO and Specialized Tarmac — machines built to find the best compromise between low weight and aerodynamic efficiency rather than maximizing either at the expense of the other. The downtube widens as it approaches the bottom bracket for stiffness and to manage airflow through the mid-frame. The fork is a dedicated disc-brake design with concave upper sheaths that optimize tire clearance and wheel passage for rubber up to 28mm, while the concave chainstay profile provides additional clearance at the rear. Cable routing runs into a port at the top of the fork crown for the front brake hose and into the top of the down tube for the rear — partially integrated rather than fully hidden, which is the visible distinction between the V3 and the V3Rs.

The geometry is built on Colnago's traditional approach to race bike handling, which has remained consistent even as the industry has moved toward more variable stacks and reaches. The V3's parallel head and seat tube angles, combined with a 43mm fork offset, produce handling that Colnago describes as stable and confidence-inspiring rather than nervous and reactive. The head tube is shorter and the fork is longer than on the previous V3 generation, which lowers the front end and improves balance across all eight sizes. The bottom bracket has been lowered to ease access to wider tires and improve cornering clearance. Stack and reach across the size range (42–58cm) track toward a committed road-racing position — riders moving up from entry-level bikes should consult the geometry chart carefully, as Colnago's sizing convention runs smaller than most European competitors.

The seatpost clamp is a notable detail: a new integrated locking system built smaller and lighter than the previous design, with modulated tightening built into the frame interface rather than relying on a separate external binder. The Colnago V3 carbon seatpost is a dedicated aero profile shaped to the seat tube, with 20mm offset for reach adjustment. The handlebar is the Colnago Carbon R41 — a carbon drop bar with a Kamm tail flat-back section on the tops that provides a modest aero benefit in the drops while also making a comfortable handhold on long climbs.

The drivetrain is SRAM Rival AXS 2x12, fully wireless, with a 48/35 crankset running against an XG-1250 10-30 cassette. The 10-30 range with 12 speeds gives single-tooth steps through the lower sprockets, which translates to smooth cadence management on rolling terrain without the large jumps of a wide-range gravel cassette. SRAM Rival AXS hydraulic disc brakes use SRAM Paceline Centerlock rotors — 160mm front, 140mm rear. Wheels are Fulcrum Racing 600, tubeless-compatible with a 19mm internal width, appropriate for the 700x28 Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Slick II tires the bike ships with. The Deda Elementi Attacco stem and Prolog Dimension saddle complete the build. Four colorways — MKRD, MKBL, MKGR, MKWH — reflect Colnago's custom color program, each a paint code rather than a generic descriptor, consistent with how Colnago has named colors across decades of production.

The RA Perspective

The V3 is the Colnago for the rider who knows what Colnago means but isn't ready to spend five figures on a V3Rs or C68. That's a real and legitimate customer, and the V3 serves them well. The frame shares the same geometry philosophy and general silhouette as the V3Rs — the handling character that BikeRadar described as stable and confidence-building rather than nervous — at a fraction of the cost.

The Rival AXS groupset is a sensible spec choice for this price point. It's wireless, which keeps the V3's clean lines cleaner, and the shift quality is reliable. The 10-30 cassette suits the bike's road-racing character well — this is not a bike built for grinding 10% gravel climbs, and the gearing reflects that.

The one honest note is the Fulcrum Racing 600 wheels. They're serviceable and tubeless-ready, but they're the component most likely to be upgraded first. At $3,999 it's a fair tradeoff — you're paying for the frame, the groupset, and the carbon bar, and the wheels are where the budget shows. A swap to Fulcrum Racing 3 or a comparable alloy upgrade would change how this bike feels immediately.

What we tell customers considering the V3 is that the ride quality from the frame and geometry is genuinely Italian — stable, purposeful, with a confidence in corners that takes a few rides to fully appreciate. Colnago didn't build this frame to be edgy or twitchy. They built it to be fast over distance, and the V3 delivers on that at a price that makes it one of the better values in our road bike lineup.
