Capo Merino Base Layer Info

The Capo Merino Base Layer is a lightweight, 145gsm merino base layer made in Italy. Capo says merino naturally regulates body temperature across climates and conditions, and that its structure resists bacteria so odor does not build up. It comes in black, sizes S through 2XL.

Fit and fabric

The cut is designed to be worn close to the skin, with flat-lock seams for added comfort against the body. The fabric is 70% merino wool, 23% polyamide and 7% elastane, so there is stretch and shape retention along with the wool. An embroidered logo finishes the piece.

Care

Capo recommends hand washing with a wool or cashmere detergent for 10 minutes, followed by a rinse in warm water. To remove excess water, roll the garment in a towel and press gently, then lay it flat on a fresh towel. Once dry, shake it gently and reshape it. Capo says that with proper care the base layer will last for years.

At 145gsm it is a lightweight layer, the sort of piece that goes under a jersey or jacket and stays out of the way.

The RA Perspective

A merino base layer is one of the simplest ways to make cool-weather riding more comfortable, and Capo's version keeps it simple. It is a 145gsm weight, which Capo calls lightweight, and the blend is 70% merino with polyamide and elastane to help it hold its shape.

The reason to choose merino over a synthetic is mostly smell and temperature range. Capo says the fabric regulates temperature and resists odor, and wool in general has a long track record for staying comfortable across multiple rides. The close fit and flat-lock seams matter more than they sound, since a base layer sits against your skin for hours and any seam that rubs will show up by mile 40.

The tradeoff is care. This is not a throw-it-in-with-everything garment. Capo recommends hand washing with wool detergent and laying it flat to dry, which is more work than a synthetic layer asks for. If you want to toss your base layers in the machine without thinking about it, factor that in. A lightweight layer also has limits. On very cold days it is a starting point under a jersey and jacket, and not a full winter solution by itself.

We would recommend it for riders who ride through spring, fall and mild winter days, and who want one base layer that does not pick up a smell after a few rides. Size it to fit snug, since a loose base layer does not do its job.
