THM Clavicula SE Crankset Info
The SE stands for “sine exceptione,” which translates, “no rule without exception. The THM Clavicula SE Crankset is an amazing exception. It is a carbon-fiber crankset that includes a carbon-fiber thru-axle, and the only metal parts are the nut, bolt, and pedal threads. Total weight for the standard 130mm spider crankset is 302g. 293g for the 110mm spider crankset.
For THM to sell this, they knew it had to be stiff and durable. There’s no reason for them to build anything unless they can make it something that people can use and abuse like a regular bike component. So they worked their engineering magic with the crankarms, the spider, the spindle, and the attachment method.
The right crankarm is attached to the thru-axle. To make sure the thru-axle was light and stiff enough for them, they made the diameter 30mm. This fits threaded bottom brackets (English and Italian threaded), as well as BB30, BB30A, PF30, BB86, BB386, BB386EVO, and BBright. You just need the right bottom bracket, or the proper diameter bearings, and spacers.
There are two different bolt circle diameters for the crank, 130mm and 110mm. While the 130mm diameter sometimes fits 38-tooth chainrings, do not go with them here; stick with a minimum of 39 teeth. While the 130mm diameter can sometimes fit rings smaller than 34 teeth, do not go smaller than 34 here.
You should be able to go with any 130mm or 110mm BCD chainrings. Likewise, any chainring mounting bolts. Aluminum are a little lighter. Steel are stiffer and more durable.
The Q-Factor for the cranks is 148mm. The chain line is 43.5mm. The available crank lengths are 170, 172.5, and 175mm. THM states the maximum rider+bike+gear weight is 120kg (264lbs)
The crankset comes with an adjusting bolt, three spacers, pinch nut and bolt. You’ll need T30 and M8 heads and a torque wrench to adjust the pre-load and lock down the crank. Adding thread-locking compound to the bolts is helpful, though not necessary. The instruction manual tells you which spacers to use where.
The THM Clavicula SE Crankset is 100% of what you need in a crankset at half the weight.
