SRAM components

SRAM has been building bicycle drivetrain components since 1987, when founder Stan Day reimagined gear shifting from the handlebars — a fix for the awkward downtube shifting he dealt with as a triathlete. That idea became Grip Shift, which became the foundation for one of cycling's major component companies. Today SRAM builds road, mountain, and gravel drivetrains spanning from entry-level mechanical through flagship wireless AXS groupsets.

About SRAM

SRAM was founded in Chicago in 1987 by Stan Day, a triathlete who saw a better way to shift — from the handlebars, not the downtube. Day partnered with engineer Sam Patterson, who built the first prototype of what became Grip Shift: a twist shifter that changed how riders interacted with their drivetrains. That single innovation launched one of cycling's major component companies, now privately held and still headquartered in Chicago. SRAM has since grown to own RockShox (suspension), Zipp (wheels and cockpit), Quarq (power meters), Hammerhead (bike computers), and Velocio (apparel) — a portfolio that spans nearly every system on a high-performance bicycle.
