ENVE SES 2.3 Disc Wheel - Front Info
The ENVE SES 2.3 Disc Wheel - Front is the front half of ENVE's lightest road wheelset, built specifically for climbing and mountainous terrain. As a complete set, the SES 2.3 comes in at around 1,200 grams, and ENVE gets there through continuously run carbon fibers, tapering laminates, and removing excess material wherever the rim doesn't need it structurally. This is a road-specific, disc-brake, tubeless-only wheel — ENVE is explicit that the SES 2.3's extremely lightweight construction isn't built for off-road or gravel use. At $1,282.50, it's priced as the front wheel for a rider building toward a genuine grand-tour-caliber climbing setup.
ENVE builds the SES 2.3 around its Smart ENVE System design, which uses different rim depths front and rear rather than matching them, because the front and rear wheel deal with airflow differently as a bike moves through it. This front wheel runs a 28mm depth, shallower than the 32mm rear, which keeps the front end predictable and stable in crosswinds and on technical descents where a deeper front rim can get pushed around by gusts. That stability matters more on this wheel than almost anywhere else on the bike, since the front wheel is what a rider is actually steering with when a mountain descent gets fast and the wind picks up.
ENVE also engineers the layup zone by zone rather than uniformly across the rim, orienting carbon fiber layers differently depending on whether a given section of the rim needs to resist impact, add stiffness, or hold a tire bead securely. That's part of how the SES 2.3 gets this light without becoming fragile. The rim uses a hookless tubeless design, which lets ENVE machine the bead seat diameter to a tighter, more consistent tolerance than a hooked rim allows, improving air retention and giving tubeless tires a more precise fit. The wide hookless bead shape also plays a role in flat protection — it gives the tire a broad, blunt surface to bottom out against on a hard hit, which spreads the impact energy out and reduces the odds of pinch-flatting compared to a narrower rim edge.
Every SES and G Series wheel, including this one, uses ENVE's INNERDRIVE Premium straight-pull hub platform. On this front wheel, that means oversized steel internals positioned inboard over the bearings, which reduces stress on the axle and keeps the hub running smoothly over time. The straight-pull hubshell also standardizes spoke length for a given rim diameter, which makes building or servicing the wheel simpler, and an anti-twist spoke hole design keeps spokes from twisting during the build process or under load — a detail that shows up later as fewer creaks and a wheel that holds true longer.
Paired with its 32mm-deep rear counterpart, the ENVE SES 2.3 Disc Wheel - Front is built for the climber who wants to feel every gram they're not carrying up a mountain, without giving up the confidence to descend it just as fast. It's a wheel built around one job — getting up and down hills as efficiently as carbon fiber allows — and doing it without compromise.
