PRO TEXTREME Carbon Tubular Disc Wheel Info

The PRO Textreme Carbon Tubular Disc Wheel is a purpose-built time trial and triathlon rear disc wheel from PRO — Shimano's component brand, whose products have been raced at the professional level by Shimano-sponsored teams including Team Sky. This is a single rear wheel designed for tubular tires and rim brakes, built around a Shimano Dura-Ace FH-9000 rear hub and shaped into a mixed flat/lenticular profile that maximizes aerodynamic efficiency while maintaining rear derailleur clearance. At 1,050g, it sits at a competitive weight for a carbon disc wheel used in professional triathlon and time trial competition.

The rim is constructed from Textreme, a spread-tow carbon fiber material developed by Oxeon. Where conventional carbon fiber uses woven or braided cloth, spread-tow construction spreads ultra-thin carbon fiber tapes into wide, flat plies before layup. The result is a higher fiber-to-resin ratio, reduced fiber crimp, and a stiffer structure per gram — because straight fibers carry load more efficiently than fibers that change direction through a weave pattern. The monocoque construction shapes the entire disc into a single integrated carbon structure rather than assembling it from separate bonded sections. Textreme is identifiable by its distinctive checkerboard appearance, a direct visual result of the spread-tow method.

Mixed Flat and Lenticular Disc Profile

The disc shape on the Textreme uses a mixed flat and lenticular profile — a standard engineering solution for rear disc wheels used with a rear derailleur. The drive side is flat, giving the derailleur clearance at the largest cog on the cassette. The non-drive side is lenticular, the convex profile that reduces aerodynamic drag and generates lift as the wheel spins. The disc gets progressively wider from the rim bed outward: 39mm at 79mm from the rim bed, 46mm at 158mm, and 51mm at the widest point at 237mm from the rim bed. That progressive taper is characteristic of a properly engineered lenticular profile. The 24mm rim bed width puts the tire at the correct width to smooth the aerodynamic transition from tire to wheel — Shimano recommends tubular tires of 24mm or wider for this reason.

Dura-Ace FH-9000 Hub and Compatibility

The hub is Shimano's Dura-Ace FH-9000 rear hub, the top-tier production rear hub from Shimano's flagship groupset family. The FH-9000 delivers smooth, consistent bearing performance and a freehub body that accepts standard Shimano HG cassettes for 10- and 11-speed drivetrains, compatible with SRAM cassettes sharing the same spline pattern. The axle is 130mm quick release — the standard spacing for road and TT frames. This is a rim brake wheel for quick release dropouts. It is not compatible with thru-axle frames or disc brake calipers.

Before purchasing, verify rear triangle clearance on your frame. The lenticular non-drive side profile is significantly wider than a standard rim, and it may not fit all chainstay and seatstay configurations. Shimano recommends measuring the left side of the rear triangle to confirm fitment. The wheel ships with a quick release skewer, valve extender, wheel bag, and a sticker to cover the valve hole. Shimano specifies carbon-specific brake pads for use with this wheel. This item is final sale at RA Cycles and cannot be returned or exchanged.

The PRO Textreme disc is the choice when maximum rear aerodynamics is the objective and the frame and course conditions support running a full disc. In triathlon, it pairs with a deep-section front wheel for a race-specific build that has been proven at the professional level — delivering the aerodynamic output of a disc wheel with the structural quality of Dura-Ace components at its core.

The RA Perspective

We sell rear disc wheels to a specific kind of customer: the triathlete or TT rider who has already committed to a dedicated race setup and wants the maximum aerodynamic return from the rear wheel. For a rim brake, quick release frame, the PRO Textreme is that wheel.

The Textreme material is the real story. Spread-tow carbon is not a marketing name for conventional carbon — it's a structurally distinct manufacturing method that produces measurably higher stiffness-to-weight than standard woven carbon layups. The checkerboard pattern is a visual byproduct of the process, but the structural properties are what matter in a disc wheel that needs to spin fast and stay true under race loads.

The Dura-Ace FH-9000 hub is as good as it gets in a production rear hub. The bearings are smooth, the freehub engagement is reliable, and the shell accepts standard HG cassettes without adaptation. These hubs hold up under years of hard use.

The fitment note is not optional. The lenticular non-drive side is significantly wider than a standard rim, and we've had customers for whom it didn't clear their frame. Measure your left chainstay and seatstay clearance before ordering — this item is final sale and cannot be returned.

The wheel ships with a QR skewer, valve extender, and wheel bag. You'll need carbon-specific brake pads on your calipers.

For a triathlete running a rim brake TT or tri bike and building a dedicated race wheel setup, this is the rear disc to build around.
