PRO 3-Spoke Clincher Front Wheel Info
The PRO 3-Spoke Clincher Front Wheel is built for riders who want the stiffness and speed of a tri-spoke design on their time trial or triathlon bike without the crosswind handling penalty of a full disc wheel. Tri-spoke wheels sit in a useful middle ground: they're stiffer and faster than a standard spoked wheel, but the open sections between the three blades let wind pass through in a way a solid disc can't, which makes the front end easier to control on exposed, gusty courses. Choosing the clincher version over a tubular also matters on race day, since a clincher lets you fix a flat with a spare tube rather than needing a fresh glued tire.
PRO builds this wheel the same way it builds its disc wheels: a 3K carbon 2x2 twill weave forms the exterior walls over a foam core interior, wrapped around a wide aluminum rim. That aluminum rim carries a machined brake track, which matters because this is a rim-brake wheel, not a disc-brake one, and a machined track is what gives you consistent, reliable braking in wet or variable weather rather than the fade you can get from an all-carbon braking surface. The rim is wide enough that PRO recommends a minimum 24mm tire, keeping the tire-to-rim transition smooth at speed.
At the center of the wheel is a Shimano Ultegra 6800 hub, giving it smooth, dependable bearing performance without stepping up to a Dura-Ace-level price. The rim itself is 65mm deep, deep enough to deliver a real aerodynamic benefit on flat and rolling time trial or triathlon courses, though it's not the wheel you'd choose for a hilly event where lighter, shallower wheels climb better. Total weight comes in at 1,040 grams for the front wheel. Because the rim is so deep, you'll need an 80mm valve, either built into your tube or added with a valve extender, to reach the valve hole through the full rim depth. The wide rim surface also has enough flat area to mount a speedometer magnet with dual-sided tape if your setup calls for one.
PRO originally brought this tri-spoke design to market as a tubular wheel before releasing it as a clincher, so the aerodynamic shape and stiffness carry over from a wheel that had already been raced and refined. As the in-house component brand under Shimano, PRO builds this wheel to pair naturally with a Shimano-equipped time trial or triathlon bike, though the Ultegra hub works with any compatible cassette body regardless of what groupset drives the rest of the bike. It ships with a PRO wheelbag and an Ultegra skewer included, so it's ready to travel to a race and go straight onto the bike. For a rider who wants a purpose-built front tri-spoke for flat-to-rolling timed events, without committing to the maintenance demands of a tubular tire, this is a direct, well-supported option.
