Pivot Switchblade V6 Pro XT/XTR Bike Info

The Pivot Switchblade V6 Pro XT/XTR Bike occupies one of the most deliberate positions in Pivot's lineup: between the Trail 429's pedaling efficiency and the Firebird's enduro-proven descending composure. It's the bike Pivot built for riders who won't accept a compromise on either end of that spectrum — who want a trail bike that climbs without dead spots and descends without running out of confidence. The V6 generation refines that intent with an updated carbon chassis, slacker head geometry, a steeper seat angle, longer reach across all sizes, and a flip chip that opens the door to mullet configuration without requiring a separate bike.

The suspension platform is DW-Link — Dave Weagle's patented four-bar linkage design, developed through years of EWS-level racing and refined across multiple Pivot generations. At 142mm of rear travel, the DW-Link on the Switchblade is tuned to resist squat under pedaling load while remaining sensitive to small-bump terrain. The anti-squat characteristics come from the geometry of the linkage itself rather than from platform damping, which means the bike climbs efficiently in all shock modes without the harshness that comes from running a firm platform setting. Out back, the Fox Factory Float X shock manages that travel with a tune specific to the Switchblade's kinematics.

The carbon V6 chassis is built with a tuned layup that varies by frame size — not a single carbon specification scaled up or down, but a size-specific stiffness profile so that the XS and the XL ride with the same relative feel relative to the forces each rider generates. The rear axle standard is Super Boost Plus at 12x157mm, which Pivot claims delivers 30% more lateral stiffness than standard Boost 148mm rear ends. That additional rigidity translates to direct, precise handling at high speed through rough terrain, where rear-end flex costs both power transfer and cornering accuracy. Size-specific chainstays — ranging from 429mm on the XS through 436mm on the XL — maintain proportional handling across the size run.

Head angle is 65.2–65.7° in full 29" configuration (dependent on flip chip position), paired with a 76–76.5° seat tube angle across most sizes. Reach runs from 410mm on the XS to 505mm on the XL — long for an all-mountain bike, which keeps the front end planted on technical descents without requiring a short stem to compensate. The flip chip provides two geometry positions: low runs full 29" with the standard head angle; high accommodates a 27.5" rear wheel in mullet configuration while roughly maintaining the geometry equivalent of the 29" low setting. In mullet mode, the head angle drops to approximately 64.3° for increased descending aggression. The Fox Factory 36 fork runs 160mm of GRIP2-damped travel up front on a 44mm offset — the stiffer 36mm stanchion diameter appropriate for the Switchblade's all-mountain to enduro capability range.

The Pro XT/XTR build pairs flagship and near-flagship Shimano components where each makes the most sense. The rear derailleur is the Shimano XTR M9100 — Shimano's top-tier mechanical mountain group — handling the 10-51T 12-speed cassette. Shifters, cassette, and chain are Shimano XT M8100. Shimano XT M8120 4-piston hydraulic brakes run 200mm Centerlock rotors up front and 180mm at the rear, providing the modulation and heat management that a capable all-mountain bike in this weight range demands. DT Swiss 350 hubs — front in 15x110mm Boost, rear in 12x157mm Super Boost Plus with a 36T Star Ratchet engagement — lace to DT Swiss XM1700 rims at 30mm internal width, tubeless-ready. Maxxis Minion DHF 29x2.5 up front and Minion DHR II 29x2.4 at the rear provide a proven traction and braking combination across variable trail conditions. The Fox Factory Transfer dropper post runs size-specific travel: 125mm on XS, 150mm on S, 175mm on M, and 200mm on L and XL.

Design Benefits

  1. DW-Link suspension: Dave Weagle's four-bar linkage provides pedaling efficiency through geometry-based anti-squat rather than platform damping — the bike climbs actively in all shock modes while maintaining sensitivity to small-bump terrain.
  2. Super Boost Plus 157mm rear axle: Claimed 30% lateral stiffness improvement over standard Boost 148mm translates to precise, direct handling at speed through rough terrain where rear-end flex costs cornering accuracy.
  3. Size-specific tuned carbon layup: Each frame size receives a custom stiffness profile rather than a scaled version of a single spec — consistent ride feel across the full XS–XL range.
  4. Two-position flip chip with mullet compatibility: Low mode runs full 29" geometry; high mode accommodates a 27.5" rear wheel (up to 2.5") while roughly preserving geometry equivalency, dropping head angle to ~64.3° for increased descending aggression.
  5. XTR rear derailleur on an XT build: The M9100 XTR derailleur provides Shimano's finest shifting precision and durability where it matters most — every other drivetrain component is XT, keeping cost rational without compromising performance.

Final Take

The Pivot Switchblade V6 Pro XT/XTR is for riders who want a single all-mountain bike capable of everything from multi-hour trail rides to technical enduro stages — and who want that bike to climb as well as it descends. The DW-Link platform, Fox Factory suspension at both ends, Super Boost Plus rear end, and mullet compatibility give the Switchblade a genuine performance ceiling. At $7,799 with an XTR derailleur, four-piston XT brakes, Fox Factory Transfer dropper, and DT Swiss 350 wheels, the Pro build positions this as a complete and competitive all-mountain package without an obvious weak point.

The RA Perspective

The Switchblade is the bike we recommend most often when someone comes in saying they want one bike that does everything. The Trail 429 is the better climber. The Firebird is the better descender. The Switchblade is the one you'd actually want to ride every day across most terrain.

DW-Link is genuinely different from most other suspension designs at this price point. The anti-squat comes from the linkage geometry itself — it's not a function of how firm the shock is set. That means the bike pedals efficiently without feeling dead or harsh, which is a difficult balance to strike at 142mm of travel. Most bikes in this category either climb like a couch or descend with a nervous rear end. The Switchblade doesn't ask you to pick.

The Super Boost Plus rear axle spec is one of those details that reads like a marketing number until you ride it back-to-back with a standard Boost bike. The lateral stiffness difference is noticeable in corners, especially in loose-over-hard conditions where the rear end tends to deflect on bikes with less rigid rear triangles.

The flip chip mullet option is worth knowing about even if you don't use it immediately. Some riders try 27.5" rear for increased playfulness on tighter trails; others run it seasonally. Either way, the bike is set up from the factory to support that choice without buying a new rear wheel standard.

One build note on the Pro XT/XTR: the XTR rear derailleur is the right upgrade over full XT. The shifting quality difference is meaningful, and the derailleur is the component that takes the most trail abuse. Worth the spec call here.
