Pivot Shadowcat Pro X0 Eagle Transmission Info

The Pivot Shadowcat Pro X0 Eagle Transmission is Pivot’s answer to a specific question: what happens when you build a trail bike with the weight discipline of a cross-country machine? The result is one of the lightest full-suspension trail bikes in its class — a 27.5” bike running 160mm up front and 140mm in the rear that tips the scales only 45 grams heavier than Pivot’s dedicated XC race bike, the Mach 4SL. The Shadowcat doesn’t arrive at that number by cutting corners. It earns it through serious engineering.

The frame is built with Pivot’s Hollow Core Carbon construction — a process that produces carbon tubes that are genuinely hollow inside, allowing engineers to reduce wall thickness without compromising structural integrity. The geometry is shaped around a super-low standover height and a design philosophy Pivot describes as “unrelenting agility.” This isn’t a bike that rolls over everything with momentum. It’s a bike that encourages precise, fast, technical riding — carving tight lines, snapping through switchbacks, and moving with you rather than around the trail.

The suspension is where the Shadowcat earns its efficiency reputation. Pivot builds it around dw-Link kinematics — the patented four-bar linkage system developed by suspension engineer Dave Weagle that has become one of the most respected rear suspension designs in mountain biking. The geometry of the dw-Link pivot placement is engineered to optimize anti-squat under power, anti-rise under braking, and small-bump sensitivity simultaneously. What that means on trail: the Shadowcat pedals with a snap that belies its 140mm travel, climbs without bobbing, and stays composed in braking bumps and repeated hits without going harsh. Pivot claims it pedals better than many 120mm bikes, and on trail it’s easy to believe.

Design Benefits

  1. dw-Link Suspension Kinematics: Dave Weagle’s four-bar linkage design solves one of mountain bike suspension’s core conflicts: efficiency versus sensitivity. By carefully positioning both pivot points, dw-Link maintains high anti-squat values under pedaling while staying sensitive to small-bump inputs. The rear wheel tracks the ground rather than bouncing off it, which translates to both better traction on climbs and more composed behavior on rough descents. At 140mm, the Shadowcat rides like a bike with less travel when you’re pushing it uphill and like a bike with more when the trail turns down.
  2. Hollow Core Carbon Frame Construction: Pivot’s Hollow Core Carbon process produces tubes that are structurally hollow rather than foam-filled, enabling meaningful weight reduction across the frame without compromising the stiffness and impact resistance the material needs to deliver. The frame weighs within 45 grams of Pivot’s XC race platform — a figure that puts the Shadowcat in rare company for a 140mm trail bike running proper trail components and geometry.
  3. Fox Factory Suspension Package: The Factory 36 fork and Float DPS rear shock represent Fox’s top-tier lineup for trail applications. The 36 chassis with FIT4 damper gives fine-grained compression adjustment across a wide range of rider weights and trail conditions. The Float DPS on the rear runs the dw-Link’s carefully engineered travel with the tuning control to match. Factory-level suspension means you’re working with the same platform that factory teams use to dial in their setups — not a volume-spec component that needs to be upgraded later.
  4. SRAM X0 Eagle T-Type 12-speed Transmission: SRAM’s T-Type Transmission platform redesigns the traditional drivetrain interface — the derailleur integrates directly with the bike’s UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger), eliminating the B-limit screw and reducing the adjustment variables that traditional derailleurs require. The X0 Eagle 12-speed gives a 520% gear range via the 10–52T cassette, which covers everything from sustained steep climbs to fast fire-road descents. The 32T front chainring is optimized for the Shadowcat’s trail-endurance intent.
  5. DT Swiss XM1700 Wheels with 350 Hubs: The XM1700 rims are DT Swiss’s trail-focused aluminum wheel — built for durability and reliability over long mileage on technical terrain. The DT Swiss 350 hubs are a step above standard spec, known for their precision internals and long-term serviceability. These aren’t carbon race wheels, but they’re honest trail wheels that hold up under real riding conditions and can be maintained or rebuilt rather than replaced.
  6. Size-Specific Fox Transfer Factory Dropper: The Fox Transfer Factory dropper is spec’d to three different travel lengths based on frame size — 125mm for XS, 150mm for S/M, and 175mm for M/L. Sizing the dropper to the frame means the saddle actually gets out of the way on descents regardless of rider height, rather than a one-size compromise that leaves smaller riders with too much drop or larger riders with not enough. Factory-level internals mean the action stays smooth over years of use.

Final Take

The Pivot Shadowcat Pro is for trail riders who care about going fast in both directions. If your trail riding skews toward steep technical terrain where weight and agility matter as much as suspension travel, and you want a bike that climbs with efficiency you’d expect from a dedicated XC machine while descending with real confidence, the Shadowcat delivers that balance as well as any trail bike in its category. At $8,499, the Pro build pairs Pivot’s best frame technology with a Fox Factory suspension package and SRAM’s T-Type drivetrain — a setup that holds up to serious riding and doesn’t ask for immediate upgrades.

The RA Perspective

The Shadowcat is the bike we recommend when someone comes in saying they want to go faster on trail but they're tired of heavy bikes that feel like work on the climbs.

The weight story is real. This is a 140mm trail bike that weighs close to what some 100mm XC bikes weigh, and you feel that every time you point it uphill. The dw-Link kinematics do exactly what Pivot claims — it pedals with a snap that doesn't match the travel numbers. We've had customers come in expecting to feel the suspension bobbing under power and leave genuinely surprised at how locked-down it feels when you're pushing.

The 27.5" wheel choice is worth understanding. Pivot built this bike around 27.5" intentionally, not because they couldn't figure out how to make a 29er work at this weight. At this travel range and this frame weight, the 27.5" gives quicker steering initiation and more playful handling through tight, technical terrain. It's not the roll-over-everything confidence of a 29er — it's more precise and reactive, which suits the bike's aggressive trail character.

The Fox Factory suspension package on this build is properly dialed. The Float DPS on the rear does a good job of keeping the dw-Link active without feeling wallowy, and the Factory 36 up front is the right chassis for 160mm of controlled travel.

One honest note: the Maxxis Dissector is a fast-rolling tire for trail riding but isn't the most aggressive mud/loose tire out there. Riders doing very steep, loose terrain may want to swap to a Minion DHF up front. For most trail conditions, it's a solid choice.

This is a genuinely exciting bike to ride. It rewards technical ability and punishes lazy riding in the best way — it pushes you to be better.
