OPEN U.P.PER. 2.0 Chassis Info
Ten years ago, OPEN's original U.P. redefined what a performance gravel bike could be. The OPEN U.P.PER. 2.0 Chassis is the result of a decade of refinement — faster, lighter, and more composed than its predecessor, without losing the trait OPEN riders have always relied on: a ride quality that makes mixed terrain feel like less of a compromise and more of an advantage. This is the race-focused variant of the U.P. 2.0 family. Where the standard U.P. 2.0 adds cargo rivnuts for bikepacking, the U.P.PER. 2.0 strips it back to a superlight layup and an aero fork. The result is a gravel frameset that lines up at the front of fast group rides just as willingly as it does at a gravel race start.
The frame itself weighs 880g — painted, including the T47 threaded BB shell. The carbon layup is distinct from the standard U.P. 2.0, blending fiber types to balance stiffness with impact toughness across every part of the frame. OPEN's design philosophy — aero where it matters, comfort where it counts — plays out in the tube shapes. The deep headtube cuts drag where airflow is cleanest. The downtube is flat-sided to direct stiffness into the bottom bracket. Moving rearward, the wire-stays take over: thin, sideways-bowing seatstays that absorb road buzz without adding width or weight. The 425mm chainstays keep the rear end snappy across all five sizes, and the straight stays offer maximum tire clearance — up to 700x46mm — without demanding a wide Q-factor. Every size gets its own geometry and tube shapes, and the fork crown is sized individually to maintain the same agile, lively handling from XS to XL.
The U-Turn Aero fork is standard on the U.P.PER. 2.0 — fully aero blades at 375g, with an integrated brake caliper mount via OPEN's Smartmount 160 system. Smartmount eliminates the adapter and two extra bolts that standard flatmount setups require, attaching the caliper directly to the fork and frame for 160mm rotors front and rear. It's lighter, stiffer, and more rigid than what you'd get with an off-the-shelf flatmount setup. The thru-axles are Carbon-Ti X-12 units, 100x12mm front and 142x12mm rear. UDH rear dropout compatibility means you can run SRAM AXS, Shimano GRX Di2, or Campagnolo Super Record 13 without hunting for proprietary hangers.
The cockpit is the OPEN B.A.R. — Break All Rules — a one-piece bar and stem built around a patented internal clamp system that adjusts stem length by 15mm in precise 5mm steps. Unlike most integrated bar-stems, which lock you into a fixed position, the B.A.R. lets you dial your reach without swapping components or re-routing brake hoses. The structure is 100% closed-form carbon — no vertical cuts, no metal inserts — just continuous fiber for optimal stiffness-to-weight. The bar ships with 78mm reach, 109mm classic drop, 6° backsweep, and -6° stem angle, and OPEN offers 10 bar widths from 380mm to 430mm to cover every rider. The 27.2mm round seatpost is compatible with dropper and suspension posts, keeping your options open as your riding evolves. Frame production is handled by Carbonteam in Portugal.
Design Benefits
- Superlight race layup. The U.P.PER. 2.0 uses a distinct carbon layup from the standard U.P. 2.0, bringing frame weight to 880g. It's a meaningful delta that you feel on sustained climbs and hard accelerations.
- Aero where airflow is smooth. The deep headtube, flat-sided downtube, and U-Turn Aero fork address drag at the front of the bike where clean airflow gives aero treatment the most return. The rear of the frame prioritizes compliance over marginal aero gains.
- Smartmount 160 braking. By eliminating adapters front and rear, Smartmount reduces weight, increases caliper rigidity, and simplifies the brake setup. It's a direct-mount solution for 160mm rotors that most gravel framesets don't offer.
- OPEN B.A.R. adjustability without compromise. The patented internal clamp adjusts reach in 5mm steps across a 15mm range without cutting the carbon structure or adding metal inserts. Fit changes don't require new stems or cable re-routing.
- Size-specific geometry throughout. Each frame size gets its own tube shapes and fork crown design. The handling character — agile, responsive, road-bike quick — is consistent from XS to XL, not just approximated.
- Wide drivetrain compatibility. The UDH-compatible dropout pairs with any major groupset. The T47 threaded BB at 85.5mm shell width accepts SRAM DUB, Shimano, Campagnolo, or oversized 30mm axle cranks without adapters.
Final Take
The U.P.PER. 2.0 is a gravel frameset for riders who aren't interested in splitting the difference between road and gravel — they want a bike that's genuinely fast on both, and built to race when the course calls for it. At 880g for the frame and 375g for the fork, it's competitive with the lightest road framesets on the market, and the U-Turn Aero fork and Smartmount system keep the weight savings honest rather than cosmetic. If you're building a bike around fast mixed-terrain riding, gravel racing, or aggressive road days on a frameset that handles with road-bike precision, the U.P.PER. 2.0 is where that build starts.
