BMC Twostroke AL 20 Bike Info

The BMC Twostroke AL 20 Bike is a youth mountain bike built for riders roughly 3'7" to 4'5" tall, generally ages 5 to 8, and it's designed as a real scaled-down mountain bike rather than a toy with knobby tires bolted on. BMC built the Twostroke AL frame and fork specifically around a 20" wheel platform, which means the geometry, reach, and component sizing are proportioned for a young rider's body rather than shrunk down from an adult frame.

The frame and fork are both lightweight aluminum with a powder coat finish, and the complete bike comes in at a claimed 8.6kg without pedals — light enough that a smaller rider can actually maneuver it, pick it up, and haul it over an obstacle without fighting the bike's own weight. BMC rates the frame to ASTM Level 3, a classification aimed at more capable young riders tackling moderate off-road terrain and small jumps rather than just paved paths, and the tire clearance is generous enough to run the stock 2.4" tires with room to spare.

The cockpit is where the kid-specific thinking really shows. A 650mm handlebar with a 35mm stem keeps the front end narrow and manageable rather than wide and twitchy, and the Tektro HD-M286 hydraulic disc brakes use short-reach levers sized for smaller hands, so a young rider can actually get a full finger wrap and modulate braking rather than grabbing for a lever built for an adult's reach. An SDG Fly Jr saddle and a 27.2mm alloy seatpost round out a cockpit built to fit rather than adjusted down from a bigger bike's parts bin.

Drivetrain-wise, BMC kept things simple with a 1x8 SRAM X4 setup, running a Sunrace 11-34T cassette that gives a wide enough gear range for climbing without adding the complexity of a second chainring a young rider doesn't need to manage. The alloy hubs use sealed bearings and quick-release axles, and DD32 rims are laced up to carry Kenda Booster 2.4" tires, which add real stability and traction on loose or rocky ground without requiring the higher pressures a narrower tire would need. That extra tire volume also forgives a less-than-perfect line choice, which matters for a rider still building trail confidence.

At $591, the Twostroke AL 20 is built for a family looking for their child's first real mountain bike rather than a low-cost bike-shaped object — one with hydraulic brakes, wide stable tires, and a wide-range drivetrain that can genuinely handle a dirt trail, not just a driveway. It's available in Poison Green/Black and Turquoise/Black, in one size fit for its target age and height range.

The RA Perspective

We like the Twostroke AL 20 because it doesn't cut corners just because the rider is small. Hydraulic disc brakes with short-reach levers are the detail that stands out most to us — a lot of kids' bikes in this price range still run mechanical brakes with levers a young rider can barely squeeze, and that makes a real difference in how confident a kid feels on a descent.

The 8.6kg weight is genuinely light for a bike in this category, which matters more than people expect. A kid who can pick up and maneuver their own bike ends up riding it more, and a lighter bike is easier to control on technical sections where a heavier build would push a young rider around.

The wide 2.4" tires and simple 1x8 drivetrain are the right tradeoffs for this age group — plenty of traction and gear range without asking a kid to manage a front derailleur or worry about tire pressure precision. One thing to know: this is sized for a fairly specific height range, so it's worth double-checking your child's height against the 3'7" to 4'5" range before ordering, since there's no size adjustment beyond seat and stem.

We'd recommend this bike for a family whose kid is ready to move past a balance bike or a basic single-speed and start riding real trails with real brakes.
