Lake MX30G Regular Shoes Info

The Lake MX30G Shoes are built around a straightforward idea: give gravel and MTB riders a race-fit shoe that performs on the pedals without making every off-bike moment a chore. The MX Race Last keeps the fit close and purposeful — a slightly narrower toe box and tighter heel than Lake's Competition last, with less overall volume than the Sport last. The result is a shoe that locks in around your foot like a second skin, keeping everything stable through the varied terrain and constantly shifting power demands of gravel and trail riding.

The sole is Lake's Race 100% Carbon Fiber platform, stiff enough to channel every watt of effort into the drivetrain. Over the carbon, a lugged TPU over-sole provides reliable traction on loose and technical surfaces — the kind of grip that matters when you're unclipping to navigate a muddy descent or rocky trail section. For conditions where the ground is especially soft, the sole has provisions for optional toe spikes. The cleat pattern is SPD 2-bolt, keeping things compatible with the most widely used MTB pedal systems.

The upper comes in two versions, and the choice matters depending on where you ride. The mesh option (Blue/White) uses an ultra-breathable fabric across the toe box, bridge, and heel — ventilation that pays off on long summer rides and makes quick work of drying out after a river crossing. A padded heel collar keeps the foot stable without adding bulk. The Clarino microfiber option (White/White) is the tougher build — hard-wearing and resilient to the knocks and abrasion that come with fast, technical trails. Both close via dual BOA Li2 dials, which provide precise, micro-adjustable tension in both directions and are built to handle the punishment of regular off-road use.

Design Benefits

  1. MX Race Last for a locked-in fit: The close-fitting geometry is purpose-built for racing — tighter heel and narrower toe box than Lake's other lasts keep the foot from moving under load, translating more of your effort directly to the pedals.
  2. Carbon sole with real-world traction: The stiff carbon platform doesn't compromise on grip — the TPU lug over-sole handles loose dirt, gravel, and rock, and the spike provisions add an extra layer of security when conditions get muddy or soft.
  3. Two upper options for different conditions: The mesh excels in heat and wet crossings; the microfiber handles abrasive, rocky terrain. Pick based on where you spend most of your time, not which one looks better on the shelf.
  4. Dual BOA Li2 precision: Two independent dials let you tune forefoot and instep tension separately — useful on long rides where foot volume changes and a single-dial shoe would require you to choose between tight and comfortable.

The RA Perspective

The MX30G is our go-to recommendation for riders who are doing serious gravel racing or long-distance MTB events and want a shoe that performs like a road shoe on the bike without completely abandoning them the moment they step off it.

The MX Race Last is the part that makes this shoe. It's a close, racing-oriented fit — more dialed in than Lake's Sport last and with less volume than the Competition last. Riders with a medium-width foot who want a snug feel tend to find this geometry works immediately, right out of the box. The dual BOA system gives you enough adjustability to fine-tune once foot volume shifts over the course of a long ride.

We typically steer people toward the mesh version unless they're riding heavily wooded, rocky terrain where the upper is going to take regular abuse. The ventilation is exceptional — genuinely noticeable on summer rides — and the quick-dry properties are a real advantage in events with water crossings. The microfiber is the more durable choice for riders who are hard on their gear.

One thing worth knowing: this shoe is built for pedaling efficiency, and the carbon sole reflects that. It's stiffer underfoot than a dedicated trail shoe, which is exactly what you want when you're covering big miles on the gravel bike. If you're primarily hiking or scrambling, a softer sole shoe would serve you better. But for riders who spend 95% of their time clipped in, the MX30G is hard to beat at this price point.
